Territorial reform in Lower Saxony

The municipal territorial reform in Lower Saxony was carried out from 1972 to 1978 as a district reform. At the same time, many municipalities were dissolved and the administrative structures changed (reform of the administrative districts ).

In contrast to other district reforms, this was not carried out on a set date, but gradually by means of several laws that regulated the reorganization in different areas and came into force at different times. Before the regional reform, Lower Saxony was divided into 13 independent cities and 57 administrative districts, which were combined into six government and two administrative districts.

Aurich administrative district

The administrative district of Aurich included before the municipal reform a city and four counties. On February 1, 1978, it became part of the newly established Weser-Ems administrative district .

Braunschweig administrative district

Hildesheim administrative district

For administrative district Hildesheim belonged before the municipal reform a city and eleven counties. The city of Göttingen lost its district freedom on July 4, 1964. Territorial Reform Laws

Harzgesetz

The Harz Act , which came into force on July 1, 1972, provided for a reduction in the number of communities in parts of the districts of Gandersheim , Goslar , Osterode am Harz , Wolfenbüttel , Blankenburg and Zellerfeld, as well as the dissolution of the last two.
