The district of Meppen was a district in western Lower Saxony until 1977 .

Neighboring areas

Beginning in 1977, the district of Meppen bordered clockwise to the north with the districts of Aschendorf-Hümmling , Cloppenburg , Osnabrück , Lingen and Grafschaft Bentheim . In the west it bordered the Dutch provinces of Groningen and Drente .

The district of Meppen originally covered an area of ​​828 km². Due to the district reform in the 1930s, its area grew to 1038 km². After the territorial reform of 1974, the district last covered an area of ​​949.84 km².

history

After the annexation of Hanover in 1866 by Prussia , the district of Meppen emerged from the former Hanoverian offices of Meppen and Haselünne . The Meppen district was formed on April 1, 1885, with part of the Haselünne office being assigned to the Hümmling district . Before 1815 it was part of the Duchy of Arenberg-Meppen , which was created in 1803 from parts of the Lower Monastery of Münster .

In 1930, the district of Meppen was made up of 63 communities, of which Haselünne and Meppen were towns. In addition, the Engelbertswald estate district existed in the Meppen district until it was abolished in the 1920s .

During the Prussian district reform of 1932, when the districts of Aschendorf and Hümmling were merged to form the district of Aschendorf-Hümmling, the municipalities of Ahmsen , Groß Berßen , Klein Berßen , Groß Stavern , Klein Stavern , Herßum , Holte , Lähden , Lastrup , Vinnen and belong to the district of Hümmling Wachtum and the communities Emen and Tinnen belonging to the district of Aschendorf were incorporated into the district of Meppen. On October 1, 1934, the communities Schwartenpohl and Wachendorf were reclassified from the Meppen district to the Lingen district.

In 1936/37 the district built a new administration building designed by the architect Fritz Höger . There is a police station there today.

Between the Second World War and the municipal reform of 1974 the following amalgamations of municipalities occurred:

  • On October 1, 1956, Altharen and Haren were merged to form the municipality of Haren (Ems).
  • On January 1, 1963, Klein Dohren and Groß Dohren were merged to form the Dohren community.
  • On January 1, 1964, Herzlake and Backerde were merged to form the municipality of Herzlake and Holte and Lastrup to form the municipality of Holte-Lastrup .
  • On July 1, 1964, Hesepertwist and Rühlertwist were merged to form the municipality of Twist .
  • On July 1, 1967, Vormeppen was incorporated into the city of Meppen.
  • On July 1, 1968, Groß Hesepe and Klein Hesepe were merged to form the municipality of Groß Hesepe and Schöninghsdorf was incorporated into the municipality of Twist.
  • On July 1, 1970, the communities Groß Fullen, Klein Fullen, Rühle and Versen were merged to form the community Emslage .
  • On February 1, 1971, the communities Ahmsen, Herßum, Holte-Lastrup, Vinnen and Lähden were merged to form the community Lähden and Dalum, Geeste and Osterbrock to form the community Geeste.

On December 3, 1965, the municipality of Haren was also granted city rights. Since 1971 the district of Meppen has consisted of 57 municipalities, including 3 cities.

A comprehensive regional reform was carried out by the law on the reorganization of the municipalities in the Meppen area on March 1, 1974. The number of municipalities in the Meppen district was drastically reduced and the boundaries of the district were changed. Since then, the district of Meppen has been divided into five unified municipalities and one integrated municipality with three member municipalities:

  • Groß Hesepe, Bramhar and Varloh were incorporated into the municipality of Geeste .
  • Altenberge, Emen, Emmeln, Fehndorf, Haren, Landegge, Lindloh, Raken, Rütenbrock, Schwartenberg, Tinnen and Wesuwe were merged to form the town of Haren (Ems) .
  • Andrup, Bückelte, Dörgen, Eltern, Flechum, Hamm, Huden, Hülsen, Lage, Lahre, Lohe, Lotten and Westerloh were incorporated into the town of Haselünne .
  • Bookhof, Felsen, Herzlake, Neuenlande and Westrum were merged to form the municipality of Herzlake .
  • Apeldorn, Bokeloh, Borken, Emslage (excluding Rühlerfeld and Rühlermoor), Helte, Hemsen, Holthausen, Hüntel, Schwefingen and Teglingen were incorporated into the town of Meppen .
  • Leverermeer and parts of the municipality of Emslage ( Rühlerfeld and Rühlermoor ) as well as the municipalities of Adorf and Neuringe from the county of Bentheim were incorporated into the municipality of Twist .
  • The municipalities of Dohren, Herzlake and Lähden formed the combined municipality of Herzlake in the district of Meppen .
  • Groß Stavern and Klein Stavern were merged to form the municipality of Stavern , which together with the municipalities of Groß Berßen and Klein Berßen were reclassified into the district of Aschendorf-Hümmling.
  • The municipality of Wachtum was incorporated into the city of Löningen in the district of Cloppenburg.

During the Lower Saxony district reform , the Meppen district became part of the new Emsland district on August 1, 1977, together with the Aschendorf-Hümmling and Lingen districts .

On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the MEP distinctive sign when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . It was issued until April 4, 1978.
