history

The oldest building in the Twist parish.

The settlement of the southwestern bank of the border river Aa from 1775 makes Adorf the oldest part of today's municipality of Twist. The relatively late settlement of the moorland was marked by privation. This only improved in 1892 with the completion of the south-north canal .

The evangelical reformed settlers belonged to Veldhausen church until 1898 and since then to Georgsdorf , although a reformed church was built there as early as 1866. The Roman Catholic settlers belonged to Neuenhaus (Church of the Assumption of Mary) until 1829 and since then to the parish of Twist with the parish church of St. Georg on the Bült. After the Second World War , catholic services were held temporarily in an inn in Adorf because the British military government had banned the use of the church on the Bült because of its proximity to the Dutch border. As a result, there was a desire for a church of their own. From 1949 the planning of the new church began, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1950. The architect was Nikolaus Sanders. The church was built without the approval of the Osnabrück bishop, which led to disputes. Nevertheless, Bishop Berning blessed the new building in 1951, but refused to consecrate it. The official consecration of the church and the altar did not take place until 1966 by Bishop Wittler . The church, which initially only had a small roof turret, got its current steeple in 1979. Today this church is a branch church (with the rank of a chapel) of the parish church St. Georg auf dem Bült. Next to the church is a memorial to fallen parishioners from the two world wars .

In 1801 an evangelical reformed primary school was set up in Adorf. The Catholic children went to school on the Hesepertwist. The Catholic primary school in Adorf was established in 1930 and moved into the newly built school building in 1931. Today the Adorf primary school is located in the premises of the former Catholic primary school. This school is attended by children from the districts of Adorf and Hesepertwist. In the 2012/13 school year, 29 children attended primary school.

For a long time Adorf belonged to the county of Bentheim , as part of the Lower Saxon community reform on March 1, 1974, it became part of the Twist community, which was founded in 1964, and thus also part of the Meppen district . Since the district reform of 1977 Adorf has belonged to the Emsland district .

In a house fire in Mayor Hermann Ricker's house at the time of the First World War, the old Adorf municipal archive with all the old documents and certificates was burned. In 1933 a separate registry office was set up in Adorf, before that Adorf was part of the Georgsdorf registry office district .

The oldest building in the Twist community is in Adorf, it is a Low German hall house , the oldest parts of which are believed to date from the 17th century and which stood in Hohenkörben near Nordhorn until around 1850 . It was then bought by the Fuhler family, dismantled and rebuilt at its current location on the Bollmer farm in Adorf.

The Schützenverein Adorf e. V. was founded in 1920. The Sport Club Adorf e. V. was founded in 1984. In Adorf there is a village community center, two football fields, a home for athletes and a rifle cellar with shooting ranges in the cellar of the elementary school.

mayor

During its political independence, the Adorf community had the following community leaders and mayors:

  • Jan Harm Eilders (named 1881)
  • Olthoff (around 1900)
  • Hermann Rickers (until around 1920)
  • Bernhard Hake (approx. 1920 to 1931)
  • Gerhard Janning (1931 to 1946)
  • Gerhard Bollmer (1946 to 1947)
  • Rudolf Rickers (1947 to 1949)
  • Bernhard Hake (1949 to 1974)

Dialects

The population of Adorf, like that of Neuringe, speaks two different dialect variants. The Evangelical Reformed population speaks a Niederbentheim dialect, while Emsland is heard among the Catholic residents. Even if adherents of both religious denominations have been living together for a long time, they have retained their different variants of Low German.
