history
The district of Gandersheim was one of six districts that were established in the Duchy of Braunschweig on January 1, 1833 . It was formed from places of the old Brunswick offices of Amt Gandersheim , Amt Greene , Amt Seesen and from the Amt Lutter am Barenberge , belonged to the Free State of Braunschweig since 1918 and to the Braunschweig administrative district in Lower Saxony since 1946 .
On August 1, 1941, the district ceded the communities of Bodenburg and Östrum to the Marienburg district and on April 1, 1942, the Ostharingen community to the Goslar district . The law on the reorganization of the municipalities in the Harz region brought several changes to the area on July 1, 1972:
- Four communities in the district were reclassified into the Osterode am Harz district.
- Bredelem from the district of Goslar and Lautenthal from the district of Zellerfeld were incorporated into the town of Langelsheim together with two district communities .
- The community of Bilderlahe from the Hildesheim-Marienburg district was incorporated into the city of Seesen together with several district communities .
On March 1, 1974, the regional reform in Lower Saxony was continued:
- The Delligsen area came to the Holzminden district together with Ammensen , Kaierde and Varrigsen
- Six communities in the district were incorporated into the town of Bockenem in the Hildesheim district.
- With the exception of Ammensen, the communities of the joint community Auf dem Berge were incorporated into the town of Einbeck in the Northeim district.
- The new Wallmoden community was formed from the Alt Wallmoden community in the Goslar district, together with Bodenstein and Neuwallmoden in the Gandersheim district.
- Harriehausen from the district of Osterode am Harz was incorporated into the city of Bad Gandersheim together with several district communities.
- Mechtshausen and Groß Rhüden from the Hildesheim-Marienburg district were incorporated into the town of Seesen together with two district communities.
- Most of the remaining district communities were incorporated into Kreiensen and Lutter am Barenberge .
The district of Gandersheim, which last comprised seven cities and municipalities, was dissolved on August 1, 1977. Bad Gandersheim and Kreiensen came to the Northeim district; Hahausen , Langelsheim, Lutter am Barenberge, Seesen and Wallmoden to the Goslar district.
