By order of the Prussian State Ministry, the Aschendorf and Hümmling districts were dissolved with effect from October 1, 1932 and merged to form the new Aschendorf-Hümmling district. In the 1930s, the structure of the district changed several times.

  • A municipality of Wippingen existed in both the Aschendorf and Hümmling districts until 1932. In the district of Aschendorf-Hümmling the two communities were given the names Westwippingen and Ostwippingen in 1934 . On October 1, 1939, Ostwippingen and Westwippingen were merged to form today's municipality of Wippingen .
  • From the districts of Börgermoor and Börgerwald of the municipality of Börger , the new municipality of Surwold was formed on August 1, 1934 .
  • On August 1, 1934, the new Hilkenbrook community was formed from part of the Lorup community .
  • From parts of several communities, the new community Kluse was formed on September 1, 1934 , which was renamed Renkenberge in 1938 .
  • The two communities Düthe and Melstrup were dissolved on September 1, 1934 and incorporated into the communities Fresenburg and Kluse.
  • The community Neulehe was renamed on June 5, 1939 in Eggershausen . After the Second World War , the renaming was reversed.
  • On October 1, 1939, the communities of Neuarenberg and Neulorup were merged to form the new community of Gehlenberg . At the same time the community was Waldhöfe after Soegel incorporated.
  • The community of Wahn was dissolved because of the expansion of the Krupp shooting range in 1941, and the residents were relocated. The former municipality is now part of Sögel.
  • On November 1, 1943, Rastdorf was formed into its own community.

The regional reform in Lower Saxony began in the district of Aschendorf-Hümmling on January 1, 1966 with the merger of the municipalities of Spahn and Harrenstätte to form the municipality of Spahnharrenstätte . The law on the reorganization of the communities in the areas of Leer and Aschendorf-Hümmling resulted in further incorporations on January 1, 1973:

On January 1, 1974, the demarcation of the district changed:

As a result of the district reform carried out in Lower Saxony on August 1, 1977, the district of Aschendorf-Hümmling with the districts of Meppen and Lingen bordering to the south became part of the new district of Emsland . In the former district building in Papenburg-Aschendorf there is a branch of the district Emsland.

Sponsorship for the Heilsberg district

In 1954, the district of Aschendorf-Hümmling took over the sponsorship of the district of Heilsberg in East Prussia , which existed until 1945 , because Ermländer expelled from their homeland had been settled in Hümmling after 1945. The Emsland district has continued this sponsorship since 1977. A partnership between the municipality of Werlte and the city of Lidzbark Warmiński (formerly Heilsberg) has existed since 2005 . The home parlor of the Heilsberg district community was set up in Werlte.
