The district of Münden was a district in the south of Lower Saxony that existed from 1885 to 1972. The city of Münden , named after it and its administrative seat, was often called Hannoversch Münden to better distinguish it from Minden .
geography
At the beginning of 1972, the district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts Northeim and Göttingen (both in Lower Saxony), the districts Witzenhausen and Kassel , the independent city of Kassel and the district Hofgeismar (all in Hesse ).
history
Location of the district of Münden in the province of Hanover (1905) |
|
---|---|
The district was created in 1885 as part of a reorganization of the Prussian province of Hanover from the old Münden office, the previously independent city of Münden and the Meensen community and the Ellerode estate of the old Reinhausen office.
On January 1, 1973, the district was merged with the districts of Göttingen and Duderstadt in the newly formed district of Göttingen as part of the municipal regional reform in Lower Saxony .
For some institutions that survived the dissolution of the district, the district area of the Münden District continues to exist and is known as the "Altkreis Münden". For example, the school district of the Grotefend-Gymnasium Münden , the nature park Münden , the distribution area of the HNA Mündener Allgemeine still refer to the old district area.
Note on the name
The name of the district was "Münden", the district town was unofficially called "Hannoversch Münden", since 1991 it has been called " Hann. Münden ".

License Plate
On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinguishing mark HMÜ when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . It derives from the former district town of Hannoversch Münden or Hann. Münden and was issued until March 7, 1973. Since November 15, 2012, it has been available in the Göttingen district due to the license plate liberalization (with the exception of the district town, which has its own registration office).
