history

Former District administration Wesermünde (Borriesstrasse 46)
Wesermünde Tax Office (Borriesstrasse 50)

In 1932 the districts of Lehe and Geestemünde were dissolved by an ordinance of the Prussian State Ministry and merged into the district of Wesermünde. After its foundation, the district initially comprised 97 communities. The administrative seat was in the independent city of Wesermünde , which was created in 1924 through the merger of the cities of Lehe and Geestemünde and into which the city of Bremerhaven , which until then belonged to the state of Bremen (without the overseas port area ), was incorporated. The district building from 1888 was located at Borriesstraße 48/50. During the Second World War, the administration was briefly relocated to Loxstedt .

The city of Wesermünde, which did not belong to the district of the same name, was incorporated into the state of Bremen in 1947 and renamed Bremerhaven . The Wesermünder Kreisverwaltung thus had its seat in another federal state . Even today, the district of Cuxhaven has offices and other facilities, including a grammar school, in Bremerhaven, i.e. outside of its own district and state territory.

As a result of the regional reform in Lower Saxony and the associated municipal mergers, the number of municipalities in the district was reduced from 97 to 34 between 1967 and 1974. On March 1, 1974, the outer borders of the district also changed:

  • The municipality of Landwürden from the Wesermarsch district was incorporated into the municipality of Loxstedt.
  • The Kirchwistedt community moved from the Bremervörde district to the Wesermünde district.
  • The communities of Axstedt and Lübberstedt left the district and moved to the Osterholz district.

On August 1, 1977, the Wesermünde district was merged with the Hadeln district and the independent city of Cuxhaven to form the Cuxhaven district. The administrative seat became Cuxhaven. Branch offices of the health and youth welfare office remained in Bremerhaven. Today the vehicle registration office of the district of Cuxhaven has branches in Schiffdorf (Feldkamp 7) and Hemmoor . The Wesermünde tax office and the Wesermünde grammar school are also located in Bremerhaven. Furthermore, the old Wesermünde district belongs to the Bremerhaven Employment Agency district. The Kreissparkasse Wesermünde-Hadeln had its headquarters in the city of Bremerhaven. In 2014 it merged with the Sparkasse Bremerhaven to form the Weser-Elbe-Sparkasse .

The rural district did not have any municipalities.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the Wesermünde district
Blazon : "A growing green oak tree with five green acorns (3: 2)in gold over red and silver wavy divided shield base ."
Explanation of the coat of arms: The wave-shaped divided shield base points to the marshes at the mouth of the Weser, protected by dikes, the oak growing behind the dike to the Geest. The five acorns recall the five older offices: bailiwick court in the country sausages to Dorum, Office Bederkesa, Office Lehe, Borde Beverstedt, Office Hagen , 1859 to the three offices Dorum, Lehe and Hagen and 1885 to the two Altkreisen Lehe and Geestemünde summarized were.

License Plate

On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinctive sign WEM when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . It was issued until April 4, 1978.
