history

Elmlohe was built at the beginning of the 14th century by the Lords of Bederkesa from the Quabben brook on the Geeste as a low castle. Co-founder of the fortified settlement was Werner von Bederkesa, who is mentioned in 1308 in a document from the Neuenwalde monastery . On the "Freie Damm" leading to the castle, craftsmen and small farmers were settled in the elm forest there (i.e. Elmlohe). In 1346 the Lords of Elme and von der Lieth had a church built here near the castle. The church named for the Mother of God Mary was removed from the parish of Debstedt. The reason given is the long way to Debstedt and the “mortal hostility” to the Frisian Wurtsaten . Because of the disobedience to his feudal lord, the Elmloh castle under Cord von der Lieth was besieged and destroyed by an army of the Bremen council in 1485. The von der Lieth hereditary lords remained in possession of their Elmloh property until the 18th century. For the 700th anniversary of Emlohe, the event was celebrated on July 20, 2008 with a parade through the town. A comprehensive account of the history of the place was published under the title "Elmlohe - a village through the ages 1308-2008".

Until the mid-1990s, a bus route 15 connected Elmlohe with Bremerhaven and Köhlen. The timetable provided for trips every day of the week.

When it was merged with the municipality of Marschkamp, the design by the heraldist and coat of arms painter Albert de Badrihaye , who designed around 80 municipal coats of arms for the district of Cuxhaven, was incorporated into the coat of arms.

Elmlohe coat of arms
Blazon : "In blue three golden elm leaves in forked position , the stems turned towards each other, between two silver oak twigs laid to form a half-wreathover a silver bar in a wavy cut ."
Justification of the coat of arms: The elm leaves indicate the interpretation of Elmlohe as an elm tree. The oak branches are symbols of the forest in the village of Marschkamp. The wave-cut bar indicates the Geeste .

Culture and sights

Buildings

  • The Liebfrauenkirche has existed in Elmlohe since 1346. It was founded with the consent of the Archbishop of Bremen , because the way to the mother church in Debstedt was too dangerous at the time due to the hostility with the Frisians of the state of Wursten . The altar dates from 1645, the altarpiece shows the Last Supper. The church was always Evangelical-Lutheran after the Reformation, after the Bederkesa office was reformed under the city of Bremen.
  • In 1962, the preparatory work for the construction of the basic network switching and switching center of the Bundeswehr (GSVBw) 22 began in the Elmlohe district. This heavily bunkered telecommunications system was part of the nationwide Bundeswehr communication network and was intended to ensure communication in the event of a defense. Military operations ceased in 1996. In February 2009 the association Vorbei e. V. acquired the system from the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks in order to set up a museum there.
