Gustav Völker
Gustav Völker (born February 1, 1889 in Isernhagen near Hanover , † October 3, 1974 ) was a German heraldist .
Life
After an apprenticeship as a glass and porcelain painter and attending the Hanover School of Applied Arts, Gustav Völker worked as an art teacher at secondary schools from 1928 to 1964.
Gustav Völker's heraldic work is considered remarkable. Among other things, the draft for the official version of the coat of arms of the state of Lower Saxony comes from him . The Heimatbund Lower Saxony and the heraldic association "Zum Kleeblatt" in Hanover were particularly involved in the country's coat of arms after the Second World War . Back then it took a while until the form of the coat of arms could be found that was acceptable to all involved. In consideration of the sensitivities of other parts of the country, the horse was not allowed to show any similarities with the "Hanoverian" or the "Brunswick" horse. This is how the Lower Saxony horse designed by Gustav Völker was created in its typical form.
But Gustav Völker also created over 200 representative municipal coats of arms for counties, cities and communities. His heraldic illustrations can be found in the publications of the Heraldic Association. For his heraldic work, Gustav Völker was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit on his 75th birthday .
Gustav Völker has accompanied the heraldic association "Zum Kleeblatt" in Hanover for almost a lifetime and worked there among other things as secretary on the board and as leader of the Lower Saxony coat of arms (NWR). From April 16, 1914 until his death on October 3, 1974 he was a member of the Heraldic Association, of which more than 25 years were an honorary member. Gustav Völker found his final resting place in the Misburg forest cemetery in Hanover.
