Gerzen is a district in the southwest of the town of Alfeld (Leine) in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony . The L 484 runs through the place, which is also touched by the federal highway 3 .

geography

The place lies between the Reuberg in the west, the Zwisberg or Humberg in the east and the Steinberg in the south. The Leine flows further east behind the Schlehberg.

history

The place is first mentioned in the year 854 in the chronicle of the Corvey monastery as "Gherdageshusi", ie "House of Gerdag". According to oral tradition that is alive in the village, Gerdag is said to have had three sons. While the eldest, who was named after his father, took over his father's clearing yard, the younger sons Wardo and Brunkeri had to set up their own farms. The neighboring villages of Warts and Brunkensen emerged from these.

In the course of the territorial and administrative reform, Gerzen lost its independence on March 1, 1974 and has been part of the city of Alfeld (Leine) ever since.

The municipality was awarded the local coat of arms on August 10, 1938 by the President of the Province of Hanover . The district administrator from Alfeld presented it on April 24, 1939.

Foundation of the coat of arms: Gerzen is part of the medieval Landwehr of the city of Alfeld. Even today the name “Am Gerzer Schlag” (road block through a barrier and a beating) is still common in the mouths of the people, and it is known that the forefathers once often took up arms to fight off the enemy. Out of this historical fact, the idea of expressing defensibility was born.
