Otze [ ˈoːtsə ] is a village and district of Burgdorf in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony . It is about halfway between the city center of Burgdorf and the district of Ramlingen .

history

Otze is north of Burgdorf in the direction of Celle. The place name could be derived from " Odo " or from " Otto ". Based on finds, archaeologists suspect that the area dates back to 2000 BC. Was settled. The current town center is likely to have existed for 1000 years.

Otze is first mentioned in a document in 1321 in a list of properties of the St. Michaelis monastery in Hildesheim . In the Middle Ages, Otze was one of the nine independent farming villages in the "County over the Moore" around Burgwedel. They were subject to the protection and supervision of a special jurisdiction of the sovereign, the Free Court. This court only negotiated and judged minor offenses such as assault, theft, and pasture offenses. The Free Court usually met twice a year in turn in the individual villages, the last time in Otze on September 10, 1661.

In Otze, there were 20 Halbhöfner among the free men who were allowed to participate in the court. Farmers who managed their farm in whole or in part by their landlord as a fief were not allowed to participate. The place of justice was in Otze on the Lindenbrink. The once mighty linden tree on this square has been replaced by three oaks . The lion as a symbol of the free court as well as the apostle and consecration crosses painted in the Otzer chapel became part of the Otzer coat of arms in 1957. During the Thirty Years' War the farms became impoverished and deaths increased. There have been many changes in family names during this period.

On March 1, 1974 Otze was incorporated into the city of Burgdorf.

Otze coat of arms
Blazon : " Divided by green and silver , above a growing , golden lion , below a red cross ."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The lion in the coat of arms originated from the free jurisdiction of the Otze community. This sign was the old symbol for several communities that belonged to the Free Court. The free court was held twice, including three times a year and each time in a different one of the villages belonging to it. The sun wheel, the so-called cross of life, dates from pre-Christian times and was adopted as a symbol when the chapel in Otze was built around 1250 and is still used today as a wall decoration in the chapel.
