Kirkniemi paper mill

Sappi Limited is a global pulp and paper company of South African origin. The company is located in Johannesburg , in the Braamfontein district . The company is divided into five main business areas: Sappi Fine Paper , Sappi Forest Products , Sappi Specialized Cellulose , Sappi Paper and Paper Packaging and Sappi Trading . It employs around 12,800 people worldwide.

history

Sappi was founded in December 1936 as South African Pulp and Paper Industries Limited . From this name, minus the company / legal form Limited, derives from the first letters the name "SAPPI", which is essentially in use today and has been officially used since the name change in 1973. The first paper and pulp mill was built near Springs in South Africa. In 1980 the Sappi Timber Products division was formed to specialize in the sawmill sector. Through numerous acquisitions, Sappi grew into a global player in the paper market. In 1992 the German paper manufacturer Hannover Papier was bought and incorporated into the group. This made Sappi one of the largest European manufacturers of coated wood-free paper overnight. In 1997 the takeover of KNP-Leykam followed with plants in Belgium, the Netherlands (formerly KNP) and Austria (formerly Leykam). In 2002 the company acquired the coated fine papers business of Potlatch Corporation .

The group is on the stock exchanges of New York and Johannesburg stock exchanges.

Today Sappi is the largest employer in Gratkorn , Mandeni and Alfeld (Leine) .

On September 29, 2008, the company announced the signing of a contract to take over the business area for coated graphic paper from M-real - with the exception of the M-real business in South Africa. Sappi took over four paper mills for coated graphic paper in Kirkniemi and Kangasniemi in Finland , Stockstadt am Main in Germany and Biberist in Switzerland, but the latter was closed at the end of August 2011.

At the end of 2014, the first long-planned restructuring measures took effect, including direct business with "Sappi & You". This is a distribution variant in which direct contact is sought with the manufacturing industry instead of selling the paper through wholesalers.
