Kangasniemi [ ˈkɑŋŋɑsˌnie̯mi ] is a municipality in eastern Finland. It is located around 250 km northeast of the capital Helsinki in the Savo countryside .
General
The political community has existed since 1867 and, in addition to the parish village of Kangasniemi, includes the places Äkryntaipale, Harjunmaa, Hokka, Hyyrylä, Istruala, Kaihlamäki, Kauppila, Koittila, Kutemajärvi, Laitiala, Luusniemi, Makkola, Mannila, Nousiala, Puas, Paupala, Pylvänälä, Pölläkkä, Pöyhö, Rauhajärvi, Reinikkala, Rekola, Ruokomäki, Rytkölä, Salmenkylä, Seppälä, Suurola, Synsiälä, Synsiö, Tiihola, Ukonniemi, Unnukkala, Vehmaskylä, Vihave and. More than half of the residents live in the church village.
Kangasniemi is located in the middle of the Eastern Finnish Lake District . Over a fifth of the municipal area is taken up by lakes, the total length of the shore is more than 1500 km. Among other things, Kangasniemi has a share in the Puulavesi , the eighth largest lake in Finland, and the Kyyvesi . Because of its scenic location, Kangasniemi was named “Finland's most beautiful municipality” in a television program on Yleisradio in 1997 .
The largest employer is the municipality itself, and the forestry, metal and wood processing industries and tourism are also important - there are around 3500 holiday homes ( Mökkis ) in the municipality .
The double cross church of Kangasniemi ( Finnish Kangasniemen kirkko ) was built in 1811-14 as a wooden church according to plans by Matti Salonen .
The old parish (1886) and the Läsäkoski manor still belong to the older buildings of the parish.

A sex festival held annually at Lake Kutemajärvi leads to considerable media hype, which, despite its claims, is reportedly quite modest.
