history

Yleisradio was founded in Helsinki on May 29, 1926 . On September 9th of the same year the first radio program was broadcast. This day is still considered Yle's birthday today, although it was not heard extensively on the Lahti long-wave transmitter until 1928 . Yle took over existing radio clubs and developed a transmitter network so that over 100,000 households were reached in the early 1930s. In 1934 the broadcaster came into state hands and changed its name from OY Suomen Yleisradio - AB Finlands Rundradio to the shorter Oy Suomen Yleisradio and in 1944 to Oy Yleisradio .

On May 24, 1955, the first Finnish test television broadcast was conducted by students at Helsinki University of Technology . The broadcast was received by 13 people. In 1957, Yle started its first test broadcasts, the following year it began broadcasting continuously on Finnish television. Television quickly gained huge popularity in Finland, so in 1964 the station took over two competing channels and merged them into a second television channel called TV-ohjelma 2 .

Since 2013, the contributions have been levied in the form of an income-related tax (0.68%, but a maximum of 140 euros).

The head office of Yleisradio is in the district of Pasila in Helsinki , the second program Yle TV2 is in Tampere produces -Ristimäki. Smaller editorial offices are spread all over the country.

At the time of the Cold War , Yle was the only broadcaster besides the Austrian ORF to belong to both the western broadcasting organization Eurovision and the OIRT / Intervision , the former broadcasting association of the Eastern Bloc countries .

program

Yle operates four national television programs as well as six national and numerous regional radio programs. Since Finland is a bilingual country (6% of the population speak Swedish as their mother tongue), Yle also produces programs in Swedish in the two departments Finlands Svenska Television and Finlands Svenska Radio . News programs are also produced in English and Russian, and in the summer also in German. One of Yleisradio's most unusual radio shows is Nuntii Latini , a news program in Latin that was also broadcast on shortwave until 2006.

On March 31, 1993, the broadcasting of national radio programs on long wave was stopped, on December 31, 2006 the national / international programs on medium wave and the international programs on short wave were also ended.
