Pirkanmaa [ ˈpirkɑnmɑː ] ( Swedish Birkaland ) is one of the 19 landscapes in Finland . It is inland and borders on Satakunta , Päijät-Häme , Kanta-Häme , southern Ostrobothnia and Varsinais-Suomi . Historically, the western part of Pirkanmaa belongs to Satakunta, the eastern part to Häme . From 1997 to 2009 Pirkanmaa belonged to the province of Western Finland , before it formed the province of Häme with Kanta-Häme and Päijät-Häme. The administrative center and largest city in the region is Tampere .
