Päijät-Häme [ ˈpæi̯jæt ˈhæmɛ ] ( Swedish. Päijänne-Tavastland ) is one of the 19 landscapes in Finland . Since 1997 it has belonged to the Province of Southern Finland . The name is composed of Häme , which is one of the old, historical landscapes of Finland , and Päijänne , one of the great Finnish lakes. As the name suggests, the region is shaped by this lake, which is elongated in north-south direction. The landscape is hilly and varied. The southern part, on the other hand, is rather flat and without large bodies of water. The administrative center and largest city is Lahti . The area of Päijät-Häme is 6,254 km², the population is a little over 200,000.
history
The Riihimäki - Saint Petersburg railway was opened in 1870 and the Vääksy Canal a year later . Since then, transportation and trade have played an important role in the region. The village of Lahti was founded as a town in 1905 and has been a major trading town ever since. As the venue for winter sports competitions ( ski jumping World Cup , Nordic World Ski Championships 2001 ), Lahti with its three ski jumps is internationally known. The Lahti radio station has been in operation since 1924.
