Savo ( finn. Pohjois-Savo [ pɔhjɔi̯sˌsɑvɔ ], Swed. Norra Savolax , German North Savo ) is one of 19 landscapes of Finland . It essentially comprises the former province of Kuopio ( Kuopion lääni ), the northern part of the historical province of Savo . The current administrative area includes 19 municipalities, including 6 cities.

North Savo is an area rich in forests and lakes. The total area is 20,366 square kilometers, of which 16,768 square kilometers are land, with a forest portion of 83 percent. The largest lakes are Kallavesi , Haukivesi , Onkivesi . The population is around 250,000.

The administrative seat of the region is the city of Kuopio , which with more than 100,000 inhabitants also forms the regional center for eastern Finland. It was founded in 1775 and is now the eighth largest city in Finland. It has had a university since 1972 and also houses the regional library, a theater and a music center. The Orthodox Church of Finland is also located here. As early as the middle of the 19th century, important cultural personalities worked here throughout the country: the writers Minna Canth and Juhani Aho , Johan Vilhelm Snellman as well as the artist family Edelfelt and the painter Juha Rissanen. Some of her paintings can be seen in the Kuopio Art Museum.

Larger cities in North Savo are still the industrial town of Varkaus , Iisalmi , where one of the larger Finnish breweries ( Olvi ) is located, and Suonenjoki , which is known in Finland for its strawberry cultivation.

The economy of North Savo is characterized by forestry, agriculture and the metal industry. Kuopio is also an important location for technology development in the fields of medicine, biotechnology and environmental technology. Tourism also plays an important role. In Kuopio there are competitions of the World Cup in ski jumping on Mount Puijo and the Finland Ice Marathon on Lake Kallavesi . In Nilsiä there is a larger ski area on the Tahko mountain. In addition, the Tiilikkajärvi National Park is partly located in Northern Savo. Sonkajärvi Municipality makes the international news every year with its World Wife Carrying Championship.
