Kiuruvesi [ ˈkiuruvɛsi ] is a town in the Finnish region of Savo with 8,153 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the northwest of the country Savo 120 km northeast of the city of Kuopio on the border with Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu .

The city center takes up only a small part of the total area of 1,422.97 square kilometers. In the extensive, rural surrounding area are the villages Aittojärvi, Hautakylä, Heinäkylä, Honkaranta, Kalliokylä, Koivujärvi, Korpijoki, Koskenkylä, Lahnajoki, Lapinsalo, Laukkala, Luupuvesi, Löytänä, Piajakmankkoäki, Paajakylä, Näytänä, Niemiskylä, Najakkokaäki, Rájakyläka, Nájakoka Remeskylä, Rytky, Ryönänjoki, Salmijärvi, Salmenkylä, Sulkava, Tihilä, Toiviaiskylä and Turhala.
Founded in 1873, the municipality has been a city since 1993. After the Winter War , around 2000 Karelians from the eastern territories, which Finland had to cede to the Soviet Union, were settled in Kiuruvesi in 1940 . In the center of Kiuruvesi there is next to the Evangelical Lutheran Church an Orthodox church, which was built in 1957 for the new settlers belonging to the Eastern Church. In the 1960s the population of the municipality was at its highest level with 17,000, since then it has fallen to below 10,000 due to the constant migration to the metropolitan areas of southern Finland.
Kiuruvesi is traditionally characterized by agriculture. In 2003, 27 percent of the city's workforce worked in the agriculture and forestry sector. The main products are milk and beef. A tenth of the agricultural area of Kiuruvesi is farmed organically , which is why the city calls itself the “capital of organic Finland”.

The strongest political force in Kiuruvesi is the rural-liberal Center Party . In the 2017 local elections she received 46.5% of the vote. In the city council, the highest decision-making body in local affairs, it has an absolute majority with 17 of 33 deputies. The second strongest force in the council is the left-wing alliance with seven seats. The National Assembly Party with seven seats, the right-wing populist True Finns with two and the Christian Democrats with one seat are also represented on the city council . The Social Democrats were unable to win a seat with 2.7% of the votes.
