Lapinlahti [ ˈlɑpinlɑhti ] ( Swedish Lapinlax ) is a municipality in the Finnish region of Savo with 9617 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is in the countryside Savo 24 km south of the city Iisalmi and 60 kilometers north of Kuopio .
geography
The Onkivesi lake divides the municipality into a western and an eastern part. In addition to the parish of Lapinlahti on the east bank of the Onkivesi with 4000 inhabitants, Lapinlahti has two other settlement centers, Nerkoo and Alapitkä. All three are on State Road 5 , which crosses Finland in a north-south direction. The municipal area also includes the villages Alapitkä, Heinäaho, Horsmanmäki, Karvasalmi, Kivistö, Kiukonmäki, Lappetelä, Leppälahti, Luhi, Martikkala, Mäkikylä, Mäntylahti, Ollikäkiäi, Pajuäsjärvi, Pällikiväkiäi, Pällikiväki, Pällvänkiväi With the merger with the municipality of Varpaisjärvi on January 1, 2011, Varpaisjärvi and the villages of Juminen, Korpinen, Kärsämäki, Lukkarila, Pitkälänmäki, Sutela, Korpijärvi, Petäys-Paloinen, Karsanlahti, Syvärinpää, Jonsa, Urimolah and were added.
The eastern part of the municipality is hilly. There is also the 220 meter high Väisälänmäki hill . The Väisälänmäki belongs to the official list of the Finnish " national landscapes" thanks to its picturesque view over the surrounding lake landscape .
politics
The dominant political force in Lapinlahti is the rural-liberal Center Party . After the 2017 election, it is by far the strongest party in the local council with almost 40% of the vote and 13 of the 31 seats. The second strongest party was the right-wing populist True Finns with five seats. Also represented in the municipal council are the Christian Democrats with four seats, the Social Democrats and the Left Alliance with three members each, the conservative National Collection Party with two seats and the Green Bund with one representative. The Communist Party of Finland does not have a representative on the local council with 0.3% of the vote.

Lapinlahti is connected to the Finnish rail network via the Savo Railway, which runs from Kouvola to Iisalmi . In the municipality, State Road 5 , which goes from southern Finland to Lapland in the north, runs largely parallel to the railway line.
Sports
International FIS cross-country skiing races have been held regularly in Lapinlahti since 2002 . Some internationally successful athletes have achieved their first successes there, such as For example, the Norwegian Petter Northug , who was 18 years old and finished second in a race in the Scandinavian Cup in February 2005.
