Pielavesi [ ˈpiɛlɑvɛsi ] is a municipality in the Finnish region of Savo with 4498 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the west of the North Savo Landscape, 52 kilometers southwest of Iisalmi and 75 kilometers northwest of Kuopio . The neighboring communities of Pielavesi are Kiuruvesi in the north, Iisalmi in the northeast, Kuopio in the southeast, Tervo in the south, Keitele in the southwest and Pyhäjärvi and Pihtipudas in the west.

The extensive municipal area of Pielavesi has an area of 1,406.29 square kilometers, of which almost a fifth is water. On the lake shores of Pielavesi, which have a total length of 914 kilometers, there are 1500 holiday homes . Besides the community center belonging to Pielavesi the villages Heinämäki, Joutsenniemi, Jylhä, Jylänki, Karjala, Koivujärvi, Kotaniemi, Kuivaniemi, Kurolanlahti, Lammassalo, Lampaanjärvi, Lappetelä, Laukkala, Leppämäki, Löytynjärvi, Löytynmäki, Niemisjärvi, Pahkamäki, Pajumäki, Pappila, Pauha, Pukara, Saarela, Sulkava, Säviä, Taipale, Tallus, Tommanmäki, Tuovilanlahti, Vaaraslahti and Venetmäki.
history
In 1683 a chapel of the parish of Iisalmi was founded in Pielavesi. This was originally located on the island of Kirkkosaari, where a church tower from 1754 can still be seen today. In 1878 the wooden church of Pielavesi was built in today's parish center, which has served as the parish church since then.

Municipal council
The dominant political force in Pielavesi is the rural-liberal Center Party . In the 2017 local elections, it achieved the largest number of mandates with almost 45% of the vote and 13 of the 27 seats on the local council. It is followed by the right-wing populist True Finns with five seats. The left alliance with four members as well as the conservative National Collection Party and the Social Democrats with two representatives each are also represented in the local council . The Christian Democrats have one seat.

Sons and daughters
The best-known figure in the community is Urho Kekkonen , who was President of Finland from 1956 to 1982. He was born on September 3, 1900 in the Lepikko farm in Pielavesi. The writer Lauri Kokkonen was born in Pielavesi on August 9, 1918. Among other things he wrote the libretto for the opera “The Last Temptations” composed by his second cousin. Another pride of the community residents is the two-time Finnish volleyball champion Pielaveden Sampo . Javelin thrower Antti Ruuskanen, who was born in Pielavesi in 1984, also belongs to this club .
