Suonenjoki [ ˈsuɔnɛnjɔki ] is a town in the Finnish region of Savo with 7,145 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is in the countryside Savo 50 km southwest of Kuopio . Neighboring communities of Suonenjoki are Karttula in the north, Leppävirta in the east, Pieksämäki in the south, Rautalampi in the west and Tervo in the northwest.

In addition to the city center, Suonenjoki includes the rural villages Herrala, Hulkkola, Iisvesi, Jauhomäki, Karkkola, Kukkola, Kutumäki, Kuvansi, Kärkkäälä, Liedemäki, Luukkola, Lyytilänmäki, Rajkala, Tymänmäki, Pyrmänmäki, Toyrmäki, Toisholanmäki, Piispalanalä , Vauhkola, Vehvilä, Viippero and Jalkala. The city center is also divided into the districts of Harakkaniemi, Keskusta, Kirkkolanniemi, Kolmisoppi, Kopola, Käpylä, Lampientaipale, Mannilanpelto, Metsola, Pappilanpelto, Purola, Tervala, Yhteislaidun and Valkeisenmäki.
The state road 9 ( E 63 ) of Jyväskylä to Kuopio traverses Suonenjoki as well as the railway line from Kouvola to Iisalmi . On August 12, 1998, there was a railway accident in the city in which a passenger and freight train collided and 25 people were injured.
The strawberry farming is the main industry of Suonenjoki. The city also calls itself the “strawberry city of Finland” and has a strawberry leaf in its coat of arms. Every year in July, a "strawberry carnival" is held in Suonenjoki. From 1995 to 2006 another major event took place in the booth with the metal festival Jörisrock .

Municipal council
As in most rural areas of Finland, the rural-liberal Center Party is the strongest party in Suonenjoki . In the local council, she was also the strongest force in the local elections in 2017 with around 38% of the vote and 11 out of 27 MPs. The Social Democrats have five, the right-wing populist True Finns with four seats on the municipal council. The conservative National Collection Party has three representatives. In addition, the left-wing alliance and the Christian Democrats are each represented with two seats in the municipal council.
