Kari Tapio
Kari Tapio (born November 22, 1945 in Suonenjoki , † December 7, 2010 in Espoo ; real name Kari Tapani Jalkanen ) was a Finnish pop singer and for several decades one of the most famous singers in his home country.
Life
In the 1960s, Kari Tapio performed in Pieksämäki, where he later lived, with the local music groups "ER Quartet" and "Jami & the Noisemakers", and in 1966 he began to take singing lessons from Ture Ara .
After his first single "Tuuli kääntyköön" / "Niskavuoren nuorimmainen" (1972), Kari Tapio appeared in Ilkka "Danny" Lipsanen's show, where he initially only watched one snake used in the show. His main job was as a typesetter in a printing company.
In 1976 Kari Tapio finally had his breakthrough with the single "Laula kanssain" ("Sing with me"), followed by "Viisitoista kesää" ("Fifteen Summers") and "Kaipuu" ("Desire"). In the following years there were “Olen Suomalainen” (“I am Finnish”), a cover of the hit L'Italiano by Toto Cutugno , “Myrskyn jälkeen” (“After the storm”), “En pyydä paljon” (“I don't expect much ”) and most recently“ Paalupaikka ”(“ First Place ”) his most successful songs.
In 1999 he received an Emma , the Finnish equivalent of the Grammy, for the first time for best male artist and was also awarded the Honorary Emma in the same year. In 2003 he was awarded the Iskelmä Finlandia Prize. In 2004 he received another Emma for the album Toiset on luotuja kulkemaan for the best album of the year and in 2005 another award for best male artist followed.
Many of Kari Tapio's songs are influenced by country music . He has also written Finnish versions of some of the songs by Johnny Cash , Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson .
Kari Tapio was one of the candidates in the Finnish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, where he appeared with the song "Valaise yö". However, he only reached second place behind the Teräsbetoni group , which then competed for Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade .
On the evening of December 6, 2010, Tapio took part in the traditional reception in the Presidential Palace on the occasion of the Finnish national holiday. It was not until the evening of December 7th that he went home in a taxi and died of a heart attack at around 6.30 p.m. while driving.
