particularities
Television broadcast
The final was broadcast live from Belgrade by the television stations of all 43 participating countries from 9:00 p.m. CEST . In addition, the two semi-finals were broadcast live by RTS from 9:00 p.m. CEST and some of them were broadcast in the participating countries.
The North German Radio (NDR) transferred the first semifinal live and delayed the second semi-final as a record. The final was broadcast on the first (ARD). In Switzerland, SF Zwei and HD suisse broadcast the second semi-finals and the final. In Austria, ORF 1 broadcast the final live, despite the withdrawn participation.
useful information
- Dima Bilan's winning song for Russia was produced by successful producer Timbaland .
- The press center in Belgrade's Sava Centar was four times larger than the previous year in Helsinki. The latter was already considered the greatest in history.
- Logo and stage design were determined in a competition. 455 proposals were received for the logo and 70 for the stage design. David Cushing's "Confluence" design won the stage design competition. It symbolizes the confluence of the Danube and Sava , the largest rivers in the country. A combination of different symbols was originally chosen as the logo. It sparked a wave of horror and a signature campaign against the logo. It was pejoratively called "šljiva" (plum). It was eventually replaced with a logo designed by Boris Miljković. This is called "Confluence of Sound" and is adapted to the theme of the stage design.
- The televoting in the first semifinals was opened by the Serbian tennis player Novak Đoković , that in the second semifinals by Lys Assia , the winner of the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 , and the televoting in the final by the Serbian basketball player Vlade Divac .
- The Croatian participant "75 Cents" (Ladislav Demeterffy) was 75 years old and was the oldest participant in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest. He chose his stage name based on his age and the American rapper 50 Cent . However, this record was improved in 2013 by 95-year-old Emil Ramsauer from the Swiss group Takasa .
- Winner Dima Bilan won a winners tour, as did the Serbian winner Marija Šerifović last year . The tour includes nine stops across Europe: Belgium (June 1), Germany (May 31), Finland (May 28), France (June 2), Ireland (May 30), Norway (May 29), San Marino (June 3), Sweden (May 29) and the United Kingdom (May 31).
- As in 2003 , 2004 and 2005 , it was directed by the Swede Sven Stojanović .
- Many participants were selected in their own casting show, the Evropsko lice (Serbian for "European face").
- For the first time, the Stars and Legend of Eurovision concert was held as part of the event .
- Russia won for the first time during its 14 years of participation in the event. In 2009, Russian television was responsible for hosting the 54th Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow for the first time.
- Željko Joksimović was the first presenter who was also the composer of a competition title. This was partly criticized because of the possible conflict of interest.
- After a changing price had been awarded to the composer and interpreter of the winning title in previous years, an official, constant price has now been introduced in 2008. The designer of the trophy is the Swede Kjell Engman . The trophy is a stylized crystal microphone.
Attendees
countries
At the Euro Vision Song Contest 2008 43 nations took part, which was a new record. Azerbaijan and San Marino were there for the first time . This has further reduced the number of EBU members who have never participated - only Liechtenstein , the Vatican , which does not broadcast the competition, Kazakhstan and some members from North Africa and the Middle East remain .
According to the new rules of October 2007, only the winner of the previous year qualified as host directly for the final
and the Big Four as the financially strongest member states of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)
- Germany ,
- France ,
- United Kingdom and
- Spain .
In addition, after the new regulation, the first nine countries came from the televoting of the two semi-finals. In addition, a contribution determined by a jury of experts progressed from each semi-final.
The allocation of the countries to the two semi-finals was carried out by the EBU by means of a draw on January 28, 2008. All participating countries were divided into six different pots. Three countries from each pot were drawn into both semi-finals. The allocation to the six pots was based on geographical criteria and the experience of awarding points between the countries in recent years. For example, the voting behavior of the so-called Eastern, Balkan or Scandinavian blocs, which some quarters perceived as unfair, was to be restricted, something which Austria in particular had complained about.
In each semi-final only the 19 participating countries were allowed to vote. In addition, after drawing lots, the five pre-qualified countries, the Big Four and hosts Serbia, each received the right to vote in a semi-final - Germany and Spain in the first, France, the United Kingdom and Serbia in the second semi-final.
