The 63rd Eurovision Song Contest took place from May 8 to 12, 2018 in the Altice Arena in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . The Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) was commissioned to host the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time after Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev ( Ukraine ) for Portugal with the song Amar pelos dois .

The competition won for Israel Netta with the contribution Toy , which was written by Doron Medalie and Stav Beger. Israel scored 529 points, the fourth victory in its history at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Austria won the jury voting and came third in the overall ranking with 342 points. After the two victories by Udo Jürgens and Conchita Wurst , third place is Austria's most successful placement in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest.

After years of failure, Germany was able to take fourth place (340 points) and thus placed in the top 10 for the first time since 2012. It is the best German result since 2010. Switzerland was eliminated in the semi-finals for the fourth time in a row. Cyprus (2nd place) and the Czech Republic (6th place) achieved their best results this year.

The following requirements were placed on the venue:

  • The host arena should have space for at least 10,000 spectators.
  • A press center for at least 1500 journalists should be available on the premises.
  • The host city should be located near a commercial airport.
  • The venue should have appropriate public transport to reach the city center, the arena and hotels.

At the 2017 winner press conference, the Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, Jon Ola Sand , announced that, similar to previous years, there would be an application process for the selection of the venue in Portugal. On May 15, 2017, a news broadcast by the hosting broadcaster RTP named the Portuguese capital Lisbon as the venue for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, before it was reported the following day that the venue had not yet been determined. In addition to Lisbon, the following cities have expressed their interest in hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2018: Braga , Espinho , Faro , Gondomar , Guimarães and Santa Maria da Feira .

On June 13, 2017, representatives of the Portuguese broadcaster RTP met with the so-called Reference Group of the ESC in Geneva to exchange experiences with the choice of the venue and organizational matters. At this meeting, RTP presented the first concepts and potential venues.

On July 25, 2017, RTP announced Lisbon and the Altice Arena as the venue and the date for the ESC 2018. There would have been no alternatives in the capital to the Altice Arena, with which the city had applied. The following cities were shortlisted and visited by RTP:

city venue Maximum capacity
(at concerts)
Remarks
Braga Parque de Exposições de Braga 15,000 After the building was renovated, trade fairs and events were to take place there. At the moment the maximum capacity is 3,000 spectators. With the completion of the renovation, the venue should offer space for 15,000 spectators.
Gondomar Multiusos Gondomar 8,000 Venue of the Futsal European Championship 2007 , various sporting events and concerts. The city of Gondomar does not have enough hotels or an adequate public transport network. There is also little space to set up the press center.

1The arena was officially renamed the Altice Arena on October 16, 2017 . It was previously called MEO Arena .

Location of the Eurovision Village

The Eurovision Village (German Eurovision settlement) was located in Praça do Comércio . It was the official area for fans and sponsors for two weeks. Opening ceremony

Place of the opening ceremony

The red carpet, which this year was called the blue carpet because it was right by the sea, took place on May 6, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. CET ) at the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in the Belém district. This is where the artists and their delegations introduced themselves to the press and fans. This blue carpet also represented the official opening ceremony of the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. However, this ceremony took place close to the blue carpet , i.e. in the electricity museum. This event was moderated by Cláudia Semedo, Inês Lopes Gonçalves, Pedro Granger and Pedro Penim. RTP1 also broadcast the event live on television.

format

On October 16, 2017, the CEO of RTP, Gonçalo Reis , announced that the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 would be the cheapest ever. In addition, he described the ESC as a great opportunity for Portugal's tourism and image.

Eurovision logos

The logo and the motto for 2018 were announced at a press conference on November 7, 2017. The motto of this year's Eurovision Song Contest is All Aboard! (German: everyone on board!). RTP chose this motto because Portugal connects the rest of the world with Europe across the ocean and Portugal was the center of many central sea routes 500 years ago. In addition, the motto should also invite residents of all countries to come together.

The main logo consists of a shell , but it is not the only logo for 2018. There are a total of twelve different logos for 2018, which stand for the diversity in the ocean and also for the diversity in Europe. Gonçalo Madaíl , Creative Manager of RTP, characterizes Lisbon as a colorful city that is a great haven for cultural diversity and welcomes all visitors to the city. In addition, RTP added that the twelve different logos for 2018 will all come into their own in the show and should also be found in the streets of Lisbon.

Moderation

On January 8, 2018, RTP announced Filomena Cautela , Sílvia Alberto , Daniela Ruah and Catarina Furtado as moderators. It was the second time since 2015 that four women were to moderate the competition.

Stage design

The stage under construction

On December 5, 2017, RTP presented the stage design for 2018. It was designed by the German stage designer Florian Wieder , who already designed the ESC stages in 2011 , 2012 , 2015 and 2017 .

Again himself said that four factors influenced him in stage design. He named these as navigation, the sea, ships and a map. With the navigation he speaks of an armillary sphere , which is included in Portugal's coat of arms. It is the main element of the stage concept. According to Wieder, the sea stands for freedom and is therefore one of the most peaceful places on earth. The stage shows a modern interpretation of a wave in its organic form. Since the Portuguese built many ships and sailed the world with them, the stage was also inspired by part of shipbuilding. The map represents sea and land at the same time, with lines extending in all directions and connecting places with one another. Lisbon becomes the center in which all lines converge.

On December 9, 2017, it was announced that there would be no LED backgrounds or other projections in 2018. They want to try out new technologies for 2018 and focus more on the performers and their songs. This concept was inspired by Salvador Sobral's victory, who won the 2017 competition with a simple stage performance. The Greenroom will be back in the arena, as it has been in 2012 and since 2014 .

The stage construction began on April 4, 2018. The first technical rehearsals with the stage took place on April 23, 2018.

Live shows and tickets

The first tickets were sold on November 30, 2017. However, only tickets for the final were sold on that day. Tickets for the jury final on May 11, 2018 and for the dress rehearsal before the final on May 12, 2018 were also available. The official ticket partner is the Portuguese ticket company Blueticket . The prices should be between 35 and 299 euros.

The tickets for the two semi-finals as well as for the respective jury shows and rehearsals were sold on January 30, 2018.

The OGAE fan clubs received a ticket contingent of 1,700 tickets. This means that around 700 more tickets were available than in 2017 .

"Postcards"

On October 22nd, 2017, RTP program director Daniel Deusdado announced that the so-called “postcards” - small films that are shown in the ESC broadcasts as an introduction to the respective artists - will be shot in Portugal for 2018. All the delegations traveled to Portugal to visit various attractions.

National juries

The national juries award half of all points in the Eurovision Song Contest. For this, the members of a country will meet and watch the dress rehearsal of the shows together. Each member then creates a ranking of all the evening's contributions based on the song's voice, composition and originality. Everyone should do this independently of the others. As soon as all lists have been completed, they will be checked by the EBU and converted into points. In the German-speaking countries the following jurors sit on the jury:

New rules for jury voting

On April 27, 2018, the EBU announced that the rules for the 2018 jury voting would be slightly modified. According to the previous procedure, all five jurors from each country created a ranking. The overall result of the jury was determined by determining the average ranking of all jury members for each entry and then assigning the corresponding points to the ten best-placed entries. Each vote had the same weighting. In the past, however, this linear evaluation system was often criticized for the high influence of a strongly deviating evaluation by a juror on the overall evaluation of the jury. For example, a country could barely achieve 12 points if four jury members put a country in first place, while the remaining fifth juror put the country in 26th place. The new system provides an exponential valuation model. After that, the jurors will continue to create a ranking. However, each place is assigned an exponentially descending (not necessarily an integer) score value, starting with 12 points for the first place and one point for the last place. The upper ranking places (especially places 1 to 3) are now given a higher weighting than lower ranking places. The average score values for all jury members are then determined and points 1–8, 10 or 12 are assigned to the ten best-placed entries. The aim of this new system is to avoid that a strongly negative deviating evaluation of one juror compared to the other jurors has too much influence on the overall result.

  • countries

On November 17, 2017, the EBU announced that 43 broadcasters would participate in the ESC. Macedonia appeared to be suspended from the competition due to financial problems, which is why the country was not on the final list of participants published on November 7, 2017. But Macedonia was apparently able to solve the financial problems in time, so that for the first time since 2011 no country is withdrawing from the event. Russia returned to the ESC after a one-year break.

    Recurring performers

Singer Alexander Rybak , who won the Eurovision Song Contest for Norway in 2009 , returned in 2018. Likewise the Austrian singer Cesár Sampson , who already worked as a background singer for Bulgaria in 2016 and 2017 . Vlado Mihailov, a member of the Bulgarian participants of the band Equinox , also worked as a background singer for Bulgaria in 2017 . The British representative SuRie , who worked as a background singer for Belgium in 2015 and 2017 , also returned in 2018. In accordance with the schedule, the Flemish broadcaster VRT was responsible for selecting the Belgian interpreter. Unlike in the past, the artist and the song were selected internally. On September 28, 2017, Laura Groeseneken , who also appears under her stage name Sennek , was selected in an internal selection, as the broadcaster VRT announced. On March 4th, 2018 her track "A Matter Of Time" was released.

  • The draw for the two semi-finals took place on January 29, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. ( CET ) in the City Hall of Lisbon. The draw was moderated by Sílvia Alberto and Filomena Cautela, two of the four presenters of the show. In the drawing, all 37 semifinal participants were divided into six pots based on their voting results in the last eleven years and each was assigned to a semifinal. The division into the six pots was done by the official televoting partner of the event, the German company Digame . The draw also determines whether a country will start in the first or second half of a semi-final. However, as has been customary since 2013 , the exact order will be taken over by the producers of the show. It will also be determined in which semi-finals Portugal and the Big Five will vote. Following a request from the Rai , Italy was given the right to vote in the second semifinals without a draw. In addition, it was determined that 19 participants will appear in the first semi-final and 18 participants in the second.

On April 3, 2018, the exact order of appearance of the participating countries in the two semi-finals was announced.

In the following table all 26 participants of the final are listed in the starting order line by line from top to bottom. The 43 voting countries are listed in columns from left to right. The points received for each participant are shown in two lines.

The jury points are shown in the first line (white background). The second line (apricot background) shows the televoting points.

Each line with the individual points starts with the total number of jury or televoting points received; to the left of this is the total number of points received over both lines, as well as the placement achieved. At the end of each line is the total number of jury or televoting votes received; to the right of this is the total number of votes received across both lines.

AndorraAndorra Andorra On May 14, 2017, RTVA confirmed that Andorra will not return to the ESC in 2018 due to the lack of personnel and financial resources. 2009
Bosnia and HerzegovinaBosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina The Bosnian broadcaster BHRT announced on August 14, 2017 that it was unlikely to participate in 2018. Even if there is a regulated source of income at the broadcaster, there are still high debts that have to be eliminated first. On September 18, 2017, BHRT finally announced that Bosnia and Herzegovina would not participate in Lisbon in 2018. 2016
LuxembourgLuxembourg Luxembourg On May 22, 2017, RTL canceled due to the low chance of winning and possibly high hosting costs for 2018. 1993

Cancellation and thus no debut at the ESC

    country Reason and remark
KazakhstanKazakhstan Kazakhstan The broadcaster Khabar gained associate membership of the EBU in 2016. After a rule change, associated members can now also take part in the ESC if they are invited by the EBU. However, Kazakhstan is not on the official participant list.
KosovoKosovo Kosovo The Kosovar state broadcaster RTK announced that the country will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time if a country that has recognized the Republic of Kosovo as an independent state wins. As Portugal recognized Kosovo, there was a possibility, according to EBU guidelines, that Kosovo will take part in the ESC for the first time in 2018. However, on September 27, 2017, the station announced that Kosovo would not debut in 2018 either. As the EBU informed the broadcaster, Kosovo must be a member of the United Nations (UN) in order to participate. RTK then expressed a lack of understanding, as UN membership has so far only been a condition for EBU membership, but not for ESC participation. Despite this cancellation, the broadcaster will continue to try to participate in the ESC in the future.
LebanonLebanon Lebanon Since the failed attempt to participate in 2005 and the three-year ESC ban that was subsequently imposed, the Lebanese state broadcaster Télé Liban has not made any further attempts to participate , so that it is not on the official list of participants in 2018.
LiechtensteinLiechtenstein Liechtenstein 1 FL TV announced on September 1, 2017 that it would not debut in 2018 either. The broadcaster is currently neither an active member of the EBU, nor are the financial resources available to enable participation. As announced on November 4, 2017, Liechtenstein is planning its debut at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest . For this purpose, preparations for EBU membership are already underway and the necessary funding is guaranteed until 2019.

    Trivia

    Belarus contribution

On January 10, 2018, it was announced via the Russian network VK that the Ukrainian singer Alekseev had already performed his song " Forever" , with which he applied to the Belarusian Eurofest , in May 2017 in Stavropol . However, this was the Russian-language version of the song called " Navsegda" . However, according to EBU rules, it is not allowed to release your song before September 1st of the previous year. As a result of this incident, Sofi Lapina, a participant in the Belarusian preliminary round, resigned because she felt it was unfair that Alekseev was still allowed to participate. In response, the Belarusian broadcaster BTRC announced that Alekseev would have to revise his song in order to participate. After he did this, he was allowed to participate and even won the preliminary round. After the preliminary decision, however, it was unclear whether the EBU would allow the song at the ESC. On February 23, 2018, however, the EBU announced that Alekseev could compete with his song "Forever" . On March 28, 2018, a new version of "Forever" was published, which was also performed in Lisbon at the competition. While the lyrics have stayed the same in this version, the music has been changed and a choir has been added at the end of the song.

    Czech rehearsal accident

During the first rehearsal on April 29, 2018, Mikolas Josef injured his back while performing parts of his dance. A doctor advised him to go to a hospital. On the same day Josef wrote on Instagram : “I can confirm that I got injured during the rehearsal and the situation got worse after several hours. I can't even walk now. Got back from the first hospital and I am now heading to another one. "(German:" I can confirm that I injured myself during rehearsals and that the situation got worse after a few hours. I can no longer walk. Came just got back from the first hospital and am going to the next one. ”) He added that he will definitely perform at the ESC. On May 1, 2018, he announced that he could walk again and felt better. With a few changes to his appearance, he started his second rehearsal on May 3, 2018 without any problems.

    Censorship in China

For the delayed transmission of the first semi-final on Hunan TV, the Albanian, Irish and parts of the Swiss contribution were removed from the transmission. It is not allowed to show tattoos on Chinese television , which was the case in Albania and Switzerland. Ireland, on the other hand, was removed from the broadcast because of the portrayal of a gay couple. The censorship affected both the appearances and the summaries of the appearances in fast-forward mode. Even before the second semi-final was broadcast, the EBU announced the end of its cooperation with the Chinese broadcasting group.

    Disturbance of the British contribution
