Julija Olegowna Samoilowa ( Russian Юлия Олеговна Самойлова ; born April 7, 1989 in Uchta ) is a Russian singer .

Life

As a small child, Samoilowa, according to her own statements, fell ill with spinal muscular atrophy (Werdnig-Hoffmann syndrome) after a failed vaccination against polio , which, however, is genetic and not a consequence of the vaccination, so that she has been dependent on a wheelchair ever since.

Career

Samoilova participated in Factor A , the Russian version of The X Factor , in 2013 and reached number two. She also accompanied the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi .

Eurovision Song Contest

On March 12, 2017 she was selected internally to represent Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev with the song Flame Is Burning .

In the previous year the Crimean Tatar Jamala won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ukraine with the song 1944 about the expulsion of the Crimean Tatars by the Soviet Union ; Russia then suspected a conspiracy because the audience had voted Russian Sergei Lazarev in first place, but the juries only in fifth, which was considered to be a political statement after the Crimean crisis . Rumors surfaced that Russia might boycott the competition in 2017 . Nevertheless, the participation with Samoilowa was announced.

A short time later it became known that Samoilova had been in the Crimea in 2015 . Since Ukraine continues to regard Crimea as part of its national territory despite the Russian annexation, according to Ukrainian law it is forbidden to travel to Crimea other than via Ukrainian soil, which is why entry from Russia is considered illegal. Breaking this law is usually punished with a three-year entry ban, which was imposed on Samoilova on March 22, 2017. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the decision as "cynical and inhuman". The EBU tried to broker a solution between Ukraine and Russia, but on April 13, Russia announced that it would withdraw its participation because of the entry ban, as Ukraine refused to make an exception.

However, it had previously been announced that Samoilova would represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 if she was not allowed to participate in 2017. With the title I Won't Break , she entered the second semifinals, but here she missed the finals.
