Mumiy Troll ( Russian Мумий Тролль [ Mumij trɔlʲ ], English transcription Mumiy Troll of " Moomin - troll ") is a Russian rock band that in 1983 by the linguist Ilya Lagutenko in Vladivostok was founded.

Lagutenko based the naming on the characters from the books of the Finnish-Swedish writer Tove Jansson, the "Moomin Trolls".

Mumi Troll started out as a garage band during the last years of the Soviet Union . As attitudes toward rock music improved, they became popular in Vladivostok. However, the band broke up when Lagutenko, who speaks Mandarin and English , went to the People's Republic of China and the United Kingdom to work for a consulting firm, but it was re-established after his return to Russia. They became enormously popular after they released their first (official) album Morskaja ( Морская ; in German Marine ) in May 1997 , which was a mixture of melodic hard rock and Lagutenko's offbeat lyrics and performance. The second album Ikra ( Икра ; in German caviar ) was just as successful.

Their next album wasn't released until three years later when the band's popularity waned again. Even so, Mumi Troll is still one of Russia's most popular bands. They represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2001 , where they came twelfth with the song Lady Alpine Blue .
