Dima Bilan ( Russian Дима Билан , actually Viktor Nikolajewitsch Belan (Russian Виктор Николаевич Белан ); born December 24, 1981 in Ust-Dscheguta , Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia ) is a Russian pop singer .

Life

When Dima Bilan was one year old, he and his family of four moved to live with his grandmother in Naberezhnye Chelny in Tatarstan , where he lived until he was six. Then he moved with his family to Kabardino-Balkaria in the city of Maiski , where he also finished school. As a child, Dima Bilan was a soloist in the school choir and took part in numerous competitions. His first music teacher was Ludmila Ibragimowna Saschina. After graduating from high school, he studied at the renowned Gnessin Music Academy in Moscow .

He was named Best Russian Artist in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 at the MTV Russia Music Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards. He has released four albums so far. He became known throughout Europe for his participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 , where he came second with the song Never Let You Go . In November 2006 he received the "Best-Selling Russian Artist Award" at the World Music Awards. Further awards followed.

After Bilan had won the Russian preliminary decision "Eurovision 2008" in March 2008 , he took part again for Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) and took first place with the ballad Believe produced by Timbaland . Bilan's performance was supported by the successful Russian figure skater Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko . In 2011 he read the Russian scoring for the 56th Eurovision Song Contest in Düsseldorf . In March 2012, he and Yulia Volkova with the song Back to Her Future competed in the Russian preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 , but could not qualify for the ESC in Baku .

On June 6, 2008 Universal Music Domestic released “Believe” as a single in Germany.

Since 2012 Dima Bilan has worked as a coach in the program Golos ( The Voice ), since 2014 in the program Golos Deti ( The Voice Kids ).

Dima Bilan belongs to the right-wing populist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia . At the same time he participated in events of the parties “United Russia” and “Just Russia”. In 2011 he was positive about the opposition rallies on the occasion of the parliamentary elections. He supported Vladimir Putin in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections. He spoke out against the ban on an LGBT parade in Moscow and demanded in an open letter the removal of the openly homophobic MP Vitaly Milonov. At the same time he spoke out against the so-called "propaganda of homosexuality".
