The 57th Eurovision Song Contest took place from May 22nd to 26th, 2012 in the Baku Crystal Hall in the Azerbaijani capital Baku . The Azerbaijani singing duo Ell & Nikki won the competition last year with their entry Running Scared .
The Swedish contribution Euphoria , performed by the singer Loreen , took first place. With 372 points she achieved the second highest score in the old rating system after Alexander Rybak in 2009.
venue
The construction of a new concert complex in the center of Baku had already been proposed in mid-May 2011. The Tofiq Bəhramov Stadium and the Heydar Aliyev Palace were also named as possible venues . On August 4, 2011, the construction of the “Baku Concert Arena” on “Dövlət Bayrağı Meydanı” (German: “National Flag Square”) was officially announced. According to Azad TV , the planned " Baku Crystal Hall " should have a capacity of 25,000 people.
At the ESC, the Baku Crystal Hall had a capacity of around 16,000 people due to the stage structure. The construction costs of the hall amounted to 120 to 140 million euros. The total expenditure was estimated by the East-West Research Center in Baku at 575 million euros.
Attendees
By the end of the registration period, 43 countries had registered to take part in the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in Baku , Azerbaijan . After a two-year break, Montenegro took part again. On the other hand, Poland decided not to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest this year.
Of the participating countries, Azerbaijan as the host country and the "Big Five" (Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) qualified directly for the final on May 26, 2012. The other countries had to finish in the top ten in two semi-finals in order to take part in the final. 18 countries were to take part in the first semi-final, and 19 countries in the second. The six countries that had already qualified had the right to vote in one of the two semi-finals each.
The number of participants decreased to 42 countries when the Armenian broadcaster of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced on March 7, 2012 that Armenia would not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest in Baku after all. At this point in time, Armenia had already been drawn into the first group of starters in the second semi-final, but had not yet selected an entry.

Semifinals
Raffles
On January 25, 2012, the two semi-finals were drawn in a ceremony in Baku. The complete logo and the motto “Light Your Fire!” Based on Azerbaijan as the “Land of Fire” (petroleum) were presented. In addition to Safura and AySel, the musical background was provided by ESC winners Marija Serifovic , Dima Bilan , Alexander Rybak , Lena and Ell & Nikki with their winning titles.
The participating countries, apart from the Big Five and the host Azerbaijan, were divided into six pots based on their votes in recent years. Azerbaijan, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom were allotted to a semi-final as co-voting nations. Germany was set for the second semi-final from the start, as it had previously successfully applied to the EBU to be allowed to vote in the second semi-final. Then the other participants were drawn to one of the two semi-finals using a key from the pots. During the drawing, it was also determined whether the country would start in the first or the second half of the respective semi-finals.
At the meeting of the reference group of the European Broadcasting Union on March 20, 2012, the starting numbers in the semi-finals and the pre-qualified countries in the final were drawn. A wildcard was drawn from each half of the semi-final and from the final, and they were allowed to choose their starting place. These were Finland (No. 9) and Ireland (No. 18) in the first semifinals , Ukraine (No. 7) and Lithuania (No. 18) in the second and Spain (No. 19) in the final .

Split results between jury and televoting
On June 18, 2012, the EBU announced the separate ratings for the final according to televoting and jury votes. particularities
Since Azerbaijan is in an eastern time zone ( UTC +5, CEST +3), but the start of the events across Europe traditionally always takes place at the same time (UTC 7:00 p.m., in Germany CEST 9:00 p.m.), the events in Baku only started at 00:00 at night.
As in the past, there were inconsistencies in the choice of the contribution for Belarus in 2012. First, the singer Aljona Lanskaja won the Belarusian preliminary decision with the song All My Life . However, on February 24, 2012, the BRTC TV station announced that the group Litesound would go to Baku with We Are the Heroes .
One day after the publication of the song from San Marino, the EBU reference group announced on March 17, 2012 that the text and title of the song Facebook, Uh, Oh, Oh violated rule 1.2.2.g. This article stipulates that a song may not, among other things, contain a promotional message for a product. On March 23, San Marino released a new version of the song entitled The Social Network Song (OH OH-Uh-OH OH) . In the new version, the word “Facebook” has been replaced by the words “OH-OH”, “Beep-Beep”, “Hello” and “(Social) network”. In addition, the phrase "But soon Mark Zuckerberg 's hammerin '" was rewritten to "But soon the Internet's beepin' in".
The 86-year-old Jelisaweta Sarbatowa from the Russian group Buranowskije Babuschki set a record for the oldest person nominated for a Eurovision Song Contest, which was again set up in the following year by Emil Ramsauer from the Swiss group Takasa at the age of 95. Previously, this was the Croatian rapper 75 Cents , who appeared in 2008 as a 75-year-old. Sarbatowa is 70 years older than the youngest participant, 16-year-old Eva Boto from Slovenia. The "Grandmothers from Buranowo" will also present the first Eurovision Song Contest entry in Udmurt . In addition, Georgian and Azerbaijani are also represented on the competition stage for the first time, although Azerbaijani can only be heard with one sentence in the Bulgarian contribution Love Unlimited .
The Swede Peter Boström was co-author of both the Swedish winning title and the last-placed Norwegian entry.
The Albanian singer Rona Nishliu won the Barbara Dex Award this year .
Marcel Bezençon Prize
This year's winners of the Marcel Bezençon Prize , which has been awarded since 2002, are:
- Press award for the best song: Azerbaijan - When the Music Dies - Sabina Babayeva
- Artist award for the best artist: Sweden - Loreen - Euphoria
- Composer Prize for the best composition / text: Sweden - Thomas G: son (m & t) and Peter Boström (m & t) - Euphoria - Loreen
National preliminary decisions in German-speaking countries
Belgium
On March 17, 2012, a small preliminary decision took place under the title Eurosong 2012 , in which Iris, selected internally by VRT , presented two titles. The winner was determined solely by televoting, so that the song Would You received 53% of the votes and thus won.
Germany
On June 15, 2011, another collaboration between ARD and ProSieben for the German preliminary decision on the song contest was officially announced. The entry was determined via the casting format Our Star for Baku . After Stefan Raab's departure , Thomas D was won over as president of the expert jury.
Austria
In Austria, the preliminary round was called Austria rocks the song contest as a cooperation between the TV broadcaster ORF eins and the radio broadcaster Ö3 . Of the ten participants, eight were selected in advance by an Ö3 jury. The band received another starting place from the casting show Blockstars - Sido makes band , and interested parties could also apply for a wild card. On February 24, 2012, the band Trackshittaz emerged from the preliminary round , and they prevailed against Conchita Wurst in the jump-off - Trackshittaz finally took last place in semi-final 1.
Switzerland
In the Swiss preliminary round on December 10, 2011, the Ticino band Sinplus prevailed with their song Unbreakable . The 88-year-old singer Lys Assia , the winner of the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 , took 8th place with the song C'était ma vie composed by Ralph Siegel .

Changes to televoting
At the end of June 2011, another change to the voting mode by telephone was announced for 2012: As was the case last in 2009, the telephone lines for voting were only opened after the last title had been presented, the time window for voting was 15 minutes as it was then.
transmission
Germany
The first semi-final was broadcast live on the Einsfestival specialty channel on May 22, 2012 and repeated again on NDR television from midnight . The second semi-final, in which Germany was also entitled to vote, was broadcast by the specialty channel Phoenix and repeated by Einsfestival from 23:00. Judith Rakers moderated the countdown to the final and the after-party on the final day . The German points were given to Baku by Anke Engelke while the points were being awarded . Thus, all three moderators of last year's Eurovision Song Contest were also involved in the contest this year as jurors for the preliminary decision ( Stefan Raab ), moderator of the countdown (Judith Rakers) or in the German scoring (Anke Engelke). The German jury consisted of Anke Engelke and Mieze Katz from MIA. , Tim Bendzko , Sabine Heinrich and Ben . Both the final and the two semi-finals could be viewed on the internet via webstream on eurovision.de (German) and on eurovision.tv (English). 1 Live broadcast the second semi-final on the radio and hr3 , N-Joy and NDR 2 broadcast the final from 9:00 p.m. with Tim Frühling and Thomas Mohr as commentators.

Switzerland
In the German-speaking part of Switzerland, the first semi-final and the final were broadcast on SF two . The commentator was Sven Epiney . In the French-speaking part of the country, these two events were broadcast on RTS Deux with commentary from Jean-Marc Richard and Nicolas Tanner. In the Italian-speaking part, the first semi-final was broadcast on RSI LA 2 and the final on RSI LA 1 , commented by Clarissa Tami and Paolo Meneguzzi . The second semi-final was not broadcast by any Swiss broadcaster. SF presenter Sara Hildebrand announced the Swiss award of points.
Austria
In Austria, both semi-finals and the final with commentary by Andi Knoll - supported by Lukas Plöchl during the final - were shown on ORF eins . After ten years of abstinence, Stermann and Grissemann also commented on the final as an alternative in two-channel sound and on FM4 . Kati Bellowitsch announced the Austrian points at the final. Dominic Heinzl previously led a society magazine to get in the mood.
Albania
The EBU allowed the Albanian national television broadcaster RTSH not to broadcast the semifinals with Rona Nishliu live on television, as May 22nd had been declared a national day of mourning after a serious bus accident. Only the votes of the jury were counted for the award of points.
Production partnership
The host broadcaster İctimai TV engaged the German production company Brainpool with the technical implementation of the event. Brainpool was already responsible for the production of the ESC in Düsseldorf in 2011. As the executive producer Adil Karimli announced, they were convinced of the "excellent execution" at the time. Therefore, in 2012, Brainpool was again chosen as a production partner. In order to be able to guarantee a smooth implementation of the broadcast in Baku, almost all technical equipment such as cameras, transmission and recording technology was delivered from Germany.
Political and human rights
In connection with the construction activities for the Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, human rights violations are said to have occurred. Human Rights Watch reports that houses and apartments have been illegally expropriated and vacated, sometimes without warning and at night. Owners who did not want to leave their apartments were evicted by turning off water and electricity and even removing the windows. Houses are also said to have been torn down before they could be evacuated by residents. In addition, the compensation payments made by the government are insufficient, if they are made at all.
On the occasion of the Eurovision Song Contest, Amnesty International called for letters of appeal to the President of Azerbaijan to secure the release of political prisoners.
Based on the motto “Light Your Fire!”, Demonstrators in Baku chanted for political reforms under the motto “Fight Your Liar!” (German: “Fight your liar!”).
According to the opposition, more than 60 people were arrested at a demonstration before the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Azerbaijan. As the Alliance Public Chamber indicated, around ten protesters were injured. Dozens of people gathered on a lively promenade in the capital Baku on May 25, 2012 and said "Freedom!" called.
As the only one of the 42 jury speakers, Anke Engelke used the attention of the audience of millions in the final to clearly draw attention to the human rights situation in Azerbaijan. In the live broadcast she said at the beginning of the German announcement of points: “Tonight, nobody could vote for their own country, but it is good to be able to vote and it is good to have a choice. Good luck on your journey, Azerbaijan. Europe is watching you. "(German:" Tonight nobody could vote for their own country, but it is good to be able to vote and it is good to have a choice. Good luck on your way, Azerbaijan. Europe looks up you.")
On March 7, 2012, Armenia canceled its participation in Baku. As a reason for the boycott, the state television gave in a statement statements by the Azerbaijani President, according to which the Armenian had called the main enemies of Azerbaijan all over the world - although the authorities there had promised to guarantee the security of all participating countries.
The neighboring state of Iran described the Eurovision Song Contest as an insult to Islam and withdrew its ambassador from Baku in protest against Azerbaijan's western orientation.
