The Bakı Kristal Zalı ( English Baku Crystal Hall ; Russian Бакинский кристальный зал ) is a multifunctional event arena in Baku ( Azerbaijan ). The facility was completed on April 16, 2012 and has a capacity of 20,000 spectators. It was the venue for the 57th Eurovision Song Contest in May 2012. During the performances of the participants, the facade of the hall shone in the national colors of the respective country.

history

On August 2, 2011, the decision to build the hall was made by Alpine Bau Deutschland AG. The Hamburg architects Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp) were responsible for the design and execution . The interior construction was coordinated by the Echingen-based company Alpine Bau . After the location for the construction of the event arena had been selected, preparations for the construction began. On September 5, it was announced that the hall would have a capacity of approximately 23,000 people. With only a three-week delay, the hall was completed on April 16, 2012, after a seven-month construction period. Bad weather conditions were cited as reasons for the delay.

In September 2016 the hall was the venue for the 42nd Chess Olympiad .

criticism

There was prior criticism from the human rights organization Human Rights Watch . They criticized the eviction of apartments and houses in order to carry out their demolition so that space would be created for the arena. Some evictions took place at night without warning and no compensation was paid.
