A multi-purpose hall is usable for different events hall . Multi-purpose halls are defined as “covered venues for various types of events”. They can be in municipal, church or private sponsorship. The names multifunctional hall or event hall are also common.

The use can vary, with the focus on sporting and cultural areas. The possible uses are basically within the discretion of the respective local community. Due to the eligibility of subsidies through the laws and guidelines of the respective federal states in Germany and Austria, multi-purpose halls predominantly have separate or multipurpose rooms, which can be used for sporting activities (school and club sports) as well as for cultural events (e.g. theater performances, exhibitions) are suitable. Larger multi-purpose halls (also known as multifunctional halls), which are intended to be used for many different events, sometimes have several floors on different levels. These are then z. The current trend in naming large multi-purpose halls is to use arenas - more rarely domes - together with the name of a company that sponsors the investment or maintenance of the hall.

Most of the multi-purpose halls were built in the 1970s and 1980s, and corresponding halls were also built later in western Germany, Austria, Switzerland and, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, in the new federal states .
