The European Games in 2015 (1st European Games) were from 12 to 28 June 2015 in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku held. The European Olympic Committees organized the first edition of these games .

Baku was the only candidate to host the Games and was elected with 38 votes to 8. Azerbaijan had previously failed with its applications for the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games as well as for the Paralympics of the respective years.

A total of 20 sports were represented, 16 Olympic and four non-Olympic. The European Olympic Committees expected more than 6000 athletes. 253 medal decisions were planned in 31 disciplines. Eleven sports offered direct or indirect qualification opportunities for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, no top athletes participated in the core Olympic sports of athletics and swimming. Their associations are against the European Games, so the third division of the European Athletics Team Championships 2015 was held in Baku .

The competitions were held in 18 sports venues, twelve permanent and six temporary, including the new Baku National Stadium and the National Gymnastics Arena . The athletes' village for the participants had 3755 bedrooms.

Comparable continental games have long existed on the other four continents: the Asian Games (since 1951), the Pacific Games (since 1963), the African Games (since 1965) and the Pan-American Games (since 1951).

accident

The European Games were overshadowed by an accident. On the morning of June 11, 2015, a shuttle bus in the athletes' village got out of control for reasons not yet known. He drove onto the sidewalk and rammed a group of Austrian synchronized swimmers . The accident was recorded by a surveillance camera. 15-year-old Vanessa Sahinovic was seriously injured and then had to be placed in an artificial coma . She suffered injuries to the pelvic area and spine. Her teammates Verena Breit and Luna Pajer suffered minor injuries. In questioning the driver should, according to the Austrian Olympic Committee, which refers to the local police, have indicated that they have confused brake and accelerator pedals, and he in custody was taken. The media criticized the fact that the accidents of Sahinovic and Kira Grünberg (on July 30, 2015) received different media attention. It was also criticized that Grünberg's accident was classified as an accident at work with entitlement to a disability pension, while Sahinovic's accident was classified as a leisure accident.

Television broadcast

The games were broadcast in 33 European countries. There were also 14 other countries where the games were broadcast outside of Europe.

The Sport1 broadcaster broadcast the games live in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . The channel broadcast a total of more than 100 hours live on free TV - from the opening ceremony on June 12th to the closing ceremony on June 28th.

Furthermore, all games were broadcast live on YouTube .

criticism

In the run-up to the games, 100 political prisoners were counted. Many of these prisoners were arrested the year before the Games. The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights commented that these arrests should be viewed as preparation for the Games. It is common practice to include entry bans for foreign politicians, journalists and activists. The NGO laws are also extremely restrictive, which makes their work almost impossible. The Azerbaijani government rejects this criticism. A senior member of the Azerbaijan government, Ali Hasanov, said at a conference the day before the opening of the European Games that there were no political prisoners in Azerbaijan, only people who had committed crimes. Azerbaijan is a constitutional state and every citizen can turn to the European Court of Human Rights. The Azerbaijani embassy in Berlin also complained in a press release that a “dirt campaign” was being carried out against the host country.

Media boycott

Der Spiegel boycotted coverage of the competitions for political reasons.
