Kira Grünberg (born August 13, 1993 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian politician and former pole vaulter and athlete . Since August 2014 she has held the Austrian record for pole vaults. Career

athletics

Kira Grünberg developed her interest in the pole vault when she was seven years old while watching the World Athletics Championships on television. The children's gymnastics was followed by general athletics training, after which she specialized in the pole vault after just a few years.

Her father Frithjof Grünberg, himself a former pole vaulter, because no other coach had found himself in Innsbruck, was her first coach. Grünberg was later trained by Rainer Schopf, who was responsible for the sprint area. The former German national coach and today's Swiss national coach Herbert Czingon worked with Grünberg as a part-time coach and close consultant. The training consisted of strength, running and technical elements. There were separate exercises for acrobatic balance. In order to improve her gymnastics performance as a pole vaulter, she trained for a few days with the German gymnast Fabian Hambüchen in December 2014 .

Grünberg has been a member of the Innsbruck Army Sports Center since 2012. As an army athlete in the corporal rank , she was able to devote herself fully to training. As a member of the "Hope Squad for Rio 2016", she has been sponsored by the Ministry of Sports since October 2014 because she had the prospect of qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics . In the fall of 2013, Kira Grünberg began studying pharmacy .

Since she was 16, Grünberg, who started for ATSV Innsbruck , has competed in at least one international championship, from the U18 World Championships in 2009 to the U23 European Championships in 2013, and achieved several finals. She exceeded the Austrian records in the age groups U16 (3.72 m), U18 (4.01 m), U20 (4.15 m), U23 (4.45 m) and finally also in the general class (4.45 m) m - open air and hall). This replaced Doris Auer's 14-year-old record (4.40 m). With 4.45 m, set up during the European Championships in Zurich , she has held the Austrian record in pole vault since August 12, 2014 and qualified for the European Championship final of the top 13. In 2014, the then 20-year-old was ranked in Europe 27, 3rd in the U23 class.

In March 2015 she crossed 4.45 m at the European Indoor Championships in Prague . This height meant the new Austrian indoor record. In June 2015, Grünberg achieved the full number of points and first place with a season best of 4.35 m at the 2015 European Games in Baku ( European Athletics Team Championship ). At the Tyrolean General Class Championship in early July 2015, she jumped 4.40 m and secured the Tyrolean championship title. On July 10, 2015, Grünberg was fourth of a total of 32 participants at the 2015 European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn with a jump of 4.35 m.

Accident 2015

On July 30, 2015, Kira Grünberg was seriously injured during a training jump. It was one of the first training jumps after an ankle injury and a series after the warm-up, which was carried out with just eight steps. She placed the vaulting rod correctly in the puncture box, but the jump developed too little depth. Grünberg landed in front of the mat and hit the back of the puncture box with his neck. She broke the fifth vertebra of the cervical spine . She was admitted to the regional hospital in Innsbruck , where she was operated on for almost two hours. The diagnosis of paraplegia was already established before the operation; The aim of the operation was to stabilize the cervical spine and avoid further damage. According to the doctors, the "damage is permanent".

In the critical first few days after her accident, Grünberg's general condition developed, according to her doctor, from “satisfactory to good”, and above all there were no serious complications. Around three weeks after the accident, Grünberg was transferred from the Innsbruck University Clinic to the Rehabilitation Clinic in Bad Häring . On September 2, 2015, her manager Thomas Herzog reported for the first time about the progress made with the rehabilitation measures. According to the doctors, their mental strength is an advantage. She said the following to her manager:

“I also know that I now have a responsibility and will try to train and fight every day, just like we used to do. Perhaps we will achieve more than everyone thinks, and then I will certainly be able to give something back to many people with a similar fate. Namely the hope and strength that so many people are sending me now. "

- Kira Grünberg

The Armed Forces recognized the paraplegia as a result of an accident at work, which means that the army athlete with the last rank of corporal is socially protected. It carries u. a. the cost of treatment and rehabilitation.

After the accident, there was great public sympathy. The two Paralympics winners Günther Matzinger and Thomas Geierspichler as well as the one at Wetten, dass ..? Samuel Koch had an accident and offered help. The former professional gymnast Ronny Ziesmer , who had a serious training accident in 2004 and has been paralyzed since then, also wished the athlete luck and promised support. Federal President Heinz Fischer and his wife Margit visited them in the Innsbruck clinic and expressed their condolences. The most successful pole vaulter in the history of this discipline, Serhij Bubka , contacted her, as did pole vault world record holder Renaud Lavillenie , who visited Grünberg on September 3, 2015 in the rehabilitation clinic.

Benefit events were held in favor of Grünberg, in which celebrities from Austrian and international sports as well as amateur athletes took part. The charity campaign “Running for Kira”, initiated by athletics coach Wilhelm Lilge, was awarded the prize for “Athletes with a Heart” in the 2015 selection of athletes of the year . In mid-September 2017 it was announced that Grünberg can take cautious steps thanks to an exoskeleton .

Politics since 2017

In the National Council election in Austria in 2017 , she ran for tenth place on the ÖVP list and as the top candidate on the Tyrolean state list and was sworn in as a member of parliament on November 9, 2017.
On November 21, 2017, she was given a car that Opel had promised as a gift in 2015, which in part led to criticism and questions of incompatibility. On September 26, 2018, the National Council lifted Grünberg's parliamentary immunity so that the Public Prosecutor's Office for Economic Affairs and Corruption can continue to investigate this matter. In the course of the 2019 National Council elections, she was placed 10th on the federal list. With 549 preferential votes she moved back into parliament.
