Kematen in Tirol is a municipality with 2975 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Innsbruck-Land district in Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Innsbruck .
geography
Kematen is located in the Inn Valley , at the confluence of the Melach (from the Sellraintal ) into the Inn . The municipal area lies mainly on the alluvial cone of the Melach south of the Inn. Inn and Melach form the northern and western municipal boundaries. This is the geographical (less the cultural) border between the Upper Inn Valley and the Lower Inn Valley .
In the Afling district to the east of the main town, the old building stock has been almost completely preserved.

Neighboring communities
history
The place name Kematen probably goes back to the Latin "Caminata", which means "heated room". First documented the place is around 1143 as "Kemenatin" in the records of the counts of Dießen-Andechs justified pin Dießen called. Also the Wilten was wealthy in Kematen.
According to a joking interpretation, the place name Kematen is said to come from a saying by Maximilian I when he got up in the nearby Martinswand and was hoping for rescue: if they really lei kematen (= would come).
In Kematen, with the exception of the cellar vault of the old Widum, no building is older than 300 years, since in 1703 the Bavarians who were expelled from Innsbruck plundered and pillaged the area around Kematen and Zirl in the course of the War of the Spanish Succession (see also Bavarian Hype ).
During the Nazi era , up to 2,000 forced laborers were employed in Kematen, mostly for Messerschmitt GmbH under SA and Nazi member Walter Waizer, who was convicted of high treason in 1947 .

The last mayoral elections took place at the same time as the municipal council elections on February 28, 2016. Rudolf Häusler was elected mayor for the second time.

It was awarded in 1971 by the Tyrolean provincial government of Kematen as the municipal coat of arms and is originally the coat of arms of the Liebenberg dynasty , which used to be located here.
Culture and sights
- The core of the parish church dates from the 13th-14th centuries. Century, was changed to Baroque style around 1750 and received new furnishings in 1872.
- Free-standing grain boxes, which were built in the 14th century to store the tithe , are still there.
Economy and Infrastructure
Kematen has a connection to the Inntal Autobahn with the Zirl-Ost exit and is accessible via the L 11 (Völser Strasse) and L 13 ( Sellraintalstrasse ) roads.
The S1 and S2 lines of the S-Bahn Tirol stop at Kematen in Tirol station on the Arlbergbahn .
In addition to various commercial operations, which are mainly located near the train station, a large bakery (Bäcker Ruetz) is economically significant. The cosmetics manufacturer TUNAP Cosmetics (formerly: Kemacos Full Filling Service), which sees itself as a universal contract manufacturer of private label products, is also located here.
In Kematen there is a higher education institution for housekeeping and agriculture.
Kematen also functions as a residential suburb of the eastern provincial capital Innsbruck .
