The S-Bahn Tirol is a local transport project in the Innsbruck agglomeration and the surrounding area. At first, however, it was only an S-Bahn in name . Concrete expansion measures, including the construction of new stops, are being planned. With 40,000 passengers a day, the system has the third highest passenger frequency of the Austrian S-Bahn after the Vienna S-Bahn and the S-Bahn Styria .

The S4 line runs from Brenner to Innsbruck Hbf, some of which change to REX trains in the direction of Wörgl. Individual trains continue from Innsbruck to Völs, Zirl or Telfs-Pfaffenhofen.

Line S3 is a reinforcement line, it only runs on weekdays from Steinach in Tirol via Matrei am Brenner to Innsbruck, Monday to Friday during rush hour to Hall. S4 and S3 together form a 30-minute cycle from Innsbruck Hbf to Steinach, between Innsbruck Hbf and Hall there is a 15-minute cycle Monday to Friday during rush hour, with the fourth train per hour being a regional express.

Cycle schedule

The lines of the S-Bahn operate largely according to a regular schedule . The following network graphic shows the railway connections in North Tyrol on working days:

history

The first line has been connecting the Tyrolean capital since December 9, 2007 between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. at 30-minute intervals, initially via the stops of Hall in Tirol , Rum near Innsbruck , Innsbruck Hbf , Innsbruck Westbf, Völs, along the Inntal axis in the agglomeration. Kematen in Tyrol , Zirl , Inzing , Hatting , Flaurling , Oberhofen im Inntal and Telfs-Pfaffenhofen . These lines ran on the Unterinntalbahn and the Arlbergbahn .

On December 14, 2008, the second branch on the Wipptal-Bahn was put into operation as an S-Bahn. With it, the suburbs and villages in the Wipptal along the Brennerbahn were connected to the line network at 30-minute intervals.

Although large S-Bahn logos were installed above the entrances to Innsbruck Central Station, the Westbahnhof and other stations as a clear signal from the start, the trains had only been included in the timetable as S-Bahns since December 2008.

With the timetable change on December 13, 2009, the S1 – S5 schedule was introduced.

One year after the commissioning of the new line in the Lower Inn Valley , line S2 was extended to Jenbach in December 2013.

Since December 2015, three night S-Bahns have been running from Innsbruck to Kufstein and two in the opposite direction. In the first year, the night S-Bahn carried 42,000 people. The two S-Bahn trains from Kufstein have been connected to the Oberinntal as far as Landeck since December 2017; but two nightliner bus courses were omitted. The transport of 100,000 passengers with the night S-Bahn was celebrated on February 23, 2018 with two concerts in the night S-Bahn as “Music on the train”.

Expansion plans

In 2007 and 2008, on behalf of ÖBB Netz- und Linienentwicklung GmbH, a planning office examined and planned possible new stops and an operating simulation was created by a railway consulting company.

In 2013 specific plans for the construction of three new stations around Innsbruck ( Innsbruck Messe , Innsbruck WIFI, Hall-Thaur industrial area ) were announced. In addition, the existing stations at Allerheiligenhöfe and Innsbruck-Hötting are to be relocated to more convenient points in terms of traffic. The costs for the new or relocated or modernized S-Bahn stops amount to around 1.2 million euros. Completion was originally planned by 2016, later construction will start by 2016. According to current plans (March 2016), only the Hall-Thaur stop will be built by 2017 ; In 2020, work began on the new "Innsbruck Messe" stop.

  • Hall-Thaur industrial area : The first preparatory work started in October 2016. Commissioning took place with the timetable change in December 2017.
  • Innsbruck Messe : While the railway is in operation, the new stop will be built in the immediate vicinity of Innsbruck Exhibition Center and will open up the districts of Saggen, Dreiheiligen and northern Pradl. The main work should be completed by autumn 2021.

The modernization of the Innsbruck Westbahnhof is also planned.

A new stop Wörgl West - Terminal is being planned between Wörgl Hbf and Kundl at the level of the Wörgl freight terminal.

The plans for the Kufstein Süd (or Kufstein Endach) stop, which were envisaged several years ago, have been discontinued; this station will not be built in the long term.

The Münster-Wiesing stop on the border between the two communities is to be relocated to Münster near the newly built and heavily frequented rehabilitation center.

When it started in December 2007, according to the operator ÖBB, there were 200,000 people living in the catchment area of the S-Bahn, 30% of the Tyroleans.

From the start of 2007 to 2013, passenger increases of 60% were achieved. In 2017, 14.3 million passengers were carried, twice as many as in 2007; 390 local trains run daily.
