S-Bahn in Austria
The history of the S-Bahn in Austria begins with the Schnellbahn Wien , which has been in operation since 1962, but has only been known as the “S-Bahn” since the end of 2005. The Salzburg S-Bahn went into operation in 2004 and was called “S-Bahn” right from the start. At the moment, however, only the railways in Vienna, Linz / Upper Austria, Graz / central area Upper Styria / Styria and in the city of Salzburg meet the current criteria for an S-Bahn . Other systems are renamed regional train systems, which, however, already resemble an S-Bahn in some areas or whose further expansion into a real S-Bahn is planned.

Planned networks
Greater Lake Constance / Vorarlberg area
In the Bodensee / Vorarlberg area there are various, overlapping initiatives and projects for a cross-border S-Bahn network. The “Initiative Bodensee-S-Bahn ” proposes a S-Bahn in which all Bodensee countries would be involved. In addition to the circular railway around Lake Constance, it has a planned catchment area of Schaffhausen (CH), Radolfzell (D), Konstanz (D), Friedrichshafen (D), Lindau (D), Bregenz (A), Sargans (CH) and St. Gallen (CH). Parts of this network are by the existing S-Bahn St. Gallen and the S-Bahn Vorarlberg already covered. Liechtenstein is directly involved in a “ S-Bahn FLACH ” project that is being developed at ministerial level . In addition to the existing networks of the S-Bahn St. Gallen and S-Bahn Vorarlberg and the expansions that have already been decided (above all the “S-Bahn 2013” project of the S-Bahn St. Gallen and a link between the S-Bahn systems with a Connection Bregenz-St. Margrethen-St. Gallen), an expansion of the Feldkirch-Buchs line to every half hour is planned.
S-Bahn logo
This light blue logo is the standard logo for the S-Bahn systems in Austria with the exception of the Salzburg network. It is a further development of the dark blue, angular Vienna S-Bahn variant. In the internet timetable information of the ÖBB it has been used for all S-Bahn trains in Austria and abroad since 2008.
The logo for the Wiener Schnellbahn has been in use since the 1960s and represents a white, sharp-edged “S” on a blue background. The shape of the S is intended to stylize the course of the main route through Vienna. In the meantime this logo has been replaced by the standard logo, but can still be found at many stations in Vienna's transport network.
Since August 2017, the main S-Bahn line and the suburban line S45 have been highlighted with their own colors in the Vienna express connection network to clarify the dense intervals . The main route is shown on the network plans and platform signs in the main color old pink, the line S45 in the main color light green.
A new logo was designed for the S-Bahn Salzburg, which deviates from the Viennese system and is still used today - both on platforms and in timetables and route network maps.
