The Berchtesgaden Bahn GmbH ( BLB ) is a railway company in Berchtesgaden , the part of the S-Bahn -Services on the Freilassing-Berchtesgaden railway provides. It is a joint subsidiary of Salzburg AG and the Länderbahn .

society

BLB is a GmbH under German law with headquarters in Freilassing and was founded in May 2009. The reason was the bidding consortium made up of the two parent companies for the train services between Freilassing and Berchtesgaden in October 2006, which previously ran as the regional train type . The " Länderbahn DLB ", a subsidiary of the Regentalbahn , appears as "operational" in the sense of railway law . This in turn belongs to the Italian state railway Ferrovie dello Stato through its parent company Netinera .

In 2011, the Berchtesgadener Land Bahn carried around 900,000 passengers. In a passenger survey, the railway was twice named the best German private railway .

Served route

With the S4, the company operates a line of the Salzburg S-Bahn and runs on the Freilassing − Bad Reichenhall − Berchtesgaden route. With the timetable change on December 13, 2009, operation of the line was transferred to BLB for twelve years. On this route, it also takes over the superimposed S3, which is operated by the ÖBB from Salzburg to Freilassing .

On December 17, 2018, the BEG awarded the contract to Bayerische Oberlandbahn to operate the route from December 2021 for 15 years .

Vehicles and operation

Railcar of the BLB

Five FLIRT railcars are used on the line , some of which travel across borders on the S2 to Straßwalchen through cooperation with the Austrian Federal Railways. The railcars are leased by Alpha Trains and are based in Salzburg-Itzling , the depot of Salzburg AG on the Salzburg – Lamprechtshausen railway line , which also operates the S1 and S11.

From the takeover of operations by Berchtesgadener Land Bahn until the end of February 2010, there was sometimes no regular rail traffic. Due to delays in the acceptance of the FLIRT multiple units by the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) and vandalism, other rail vehicles had to be used or, in some cases, a replacement rail service had to be set up. The EBA named the manufacturer Stadler Rail's defaults as the cause of the delayed approval. Since March 2010, operations have been running regularly with the originally planned vehicles.

The Freilassing – Berchtesgaden route is integrated into the transitional tariff of the Salzburger Verkehrsverbund (SVV), while the local transport tariff of Deutsche Bahn AG continues to apply to German domestic traffic. A special feature of the S4 line within the Salzburg S-Bahn system is the first carriage class and the care of passengers by train attendants.
