S-Bahn in Austria

The S-Bahn Salzburg is a local transport project in the greater Salzburg area , the EuRegio Salzburg - Berchtesgadener Land - Traunstein . Its S-Bahn network consists of 5 lines, has been partially in operation since 2004 and reached its preliminary final expansion on the Austrian side in 2014.

The routes

The route network with the five lines is served by three operators: Salzburg AG , Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and Berchtesgadener Land Bahn (BLB).

Superstructure of the newly built railway bridge in the Salzburg city center

Construction of the first stop on the western branch ( Salzburg Taxham Europark ) began in spring 2005; the station went into operation in June 2006 and, with the Europark, opens up one of the largest shopping centers in western Austria as well as the private high school of the Sacred Heart Missionaries , the Salzburg EM stadium and a large number of households.

Salzburg Liefering stop

In autumn 2005 the construction of the stations Salzburg Mülln-Altstadt and Salzburg Aiglhof started, which opened on December 12th, 2009. This also gave the Salzburg Medical University (PMU) and the Salzburg State Hospital a connection to the new local transport system. At the two stops there is a possibility to change to urban trolleybuses , in Aiglhof also to some regional bus routes .

Ultimately, the Salzburg Liefering stop went into operation on December 15, 2013 , with which the neighboring settlement area was opened up.

From 2009 to 2014, the Salzburg main station was completely rebuilt. With the creation of additional through tracks for the higher-level long-distance traffic as well as its own S-Bahn platform, the station's functionality has been significantly improved; among other things, it now offers complete accessibility . In addition, through the construction of a passage under the tracks, it was given a city-district-connecting function (improved access from the Schallmoos district ). The platform for S-Bahn traffic (tracks 8 and 9) can also be accessed from the nearby Nelböck Viaduct.

In 2017 the missing section (Salzburg Liefering and Freilassing ) of the third track between Freilassing and Salzburg Hbf was completed. As a result, the S2 has been running every hour to Freilassing since December 2017. Like the S3 trains, it departs from a newly built island platform.

Cycle schedule

The underground Salzburg local train station

The trains run on the S1 line every 30 minutes. Lines S2 (supplemented by regional trains at approximately 20/40 intervals) and S4 (from the S3 between Freilassing and Bad Reichenhall also compressed to roughly 20/40 intervals) are operated every hour, and line S11, a peripheral branch of line S1 , is also used every hour (with individual connections to Salzburg, which form a 15-minute cycle to Bürmoos during peak hours). The S3 is also served hourly in the Schwarzach-St.Veit-Freilassing-Bad Reichenhall section, and since 2017 it has been running every two hours to Saalfelden. On working days, this line between Freilassing and Golling-Abtenau is compressed every half hour.

The timetable of the S1 is not, like the other train lines operating at Salzburg Central Station, tailored to the symmetry time that is common in Central Europe . From S2 and S3 to S1 and vice versa, this results in transfer times of 20 minutes and more, which contradicts the basic idea of an integral regular timetable .

Most of the S2 trains are continued as regional trains to Wels Hbf or from there as S2 of the Upper Austria S-Bahn to Linz Hbf . On weekends and public holidays, individual S2 trains are tied through as S4 to Berchtesgaden (and vice versa).

vehicles

Set of the 4023 series on the S3 in Salzburg Sam

The lines S2 and S3 operated by ÖBB are operated with 11 three-part electric multiple units of the Talent type (ÖBB series 4023) and 10 four-part multiple units of the series 4024.

Lines S1 and S11 operated by Salzburg AG are operated with 18 two-part direct current railcars from SGP or their successors.

BLB has been operating the S4 line between Freilassing and Berchtesgaden since December 2009, using five Flirt- type railcars .

Since then, ÖBB and BLB have also shared their vehicles. Until December 2017, BLB Talents of the ÖBB between Bad Reichenhall and Freilassing and BLB-FLIRTs were used by the ÖBB between Freilassing and Golling-Abtenau. Despite the different operators of the routes, this enabled continuous traffic between Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg. Since the 2017 timetable change, BLB vehicles have been compensated for kilometers on the regional train line Salzburg Hbf – Straßwalchen and occasionally on the same route as S2 for operational reasons.

Since December 2017, two Desiro ML vehicles (ÖBB series 4744) have also been in service on the S2 .

Rates

The entire S-Bahn Salzburg is integrated into the tariff system of the Salzburg Transport Association (SVV) . In the city of Salzburg (= within the so-called core zone) the S-Bahn can therefore be used with the same tickets as for buses (season tickets, 24-hour tickets or single tickets). ÖBB tariff tickets (with and without Vorteilscard ) are also valid on S-Bahn Salzburg trains, including the Einfach-Raus-Ticket . When traveling from Freilassing to Salzburg, the Deutsche Bahn AG tariff also applies as a transitional tariff to Salzburg Hbf, but not for journeys only on the section between Salzburg-Liefering and Salzburg Hbf in Austria. The Bayern-Ticket and Bayern-Ticket-Nacht as well as the Quer-durch-Land-Ticket and free travel with the German disabled ID are valid from Germany to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. Tickets are available from the ticket machines at the stations and in tobacco shops.

Park and Ride

In the Salzburg S-Bahn network, there are numerous options for conveniently switching from the car to the train. For travelers on the S2 line, the train stations Seekirchen am Wallersee, Neumarkt-Köstendorf and Hallwang Elixhausen have P&R parking spaces. In Hallein, Puch bei Hallein, Bischofshofen and Schwarzach-St. Veit can be switched between the car and the S-Bahn. On the S1 and S11 lines operated by Salzburg AG, passengers can use P&R facilities at a large number of stops. In total, Salzburg AG provides more than 700 parking spaces.

Planning

At the east branch, the Seekirchen Süd stop is intended to provide a better connection to the center of Seekirchen . In addition, the Neumarkt Köstendorf station is to be modernized and expanded into a hub station.

In the medium term, the layout of the S2 is to be changed. Instead of serving the line on the Westbahn to Straßwalchen station as before , it will in future branch off at Steindorf near Straßwalchen onto the Mattigtalbahn and lead to Friedburg . With the Straßwalchen West stop , the community of Straßwalchen, in addition to Steindorf bei Straßwalchen , would still have a connection to the S2. In order to be able to implement this measure, a partial electrification of the Mattigtalbahn to Friedburg is necessary, which is planned in the framework plan 2017–2022 of the ÖBB.

An inner city tunnel from the existing underground terminus of the S1 at the main train station to the south of the state capital has been discussed for years. With the stations Mirabellplatz , Staatsbrücke , Residenzplatz and Nonntal to be reached, the city center of Salzburg would be accessible. The railway would reappear in the Alpenstraße and along this with the stations Akademiestraße , Josefiau , Alpensiedlung and Hellbrunner Brücke would open up part of the University of Salzburg , several schools as well as residential areas and commercial areas. According to a study, the costs for such a project are very difficult to calculate due to the extremely unfavorable geological conditions. For the mayor at the time, Heinz Schaden, the estimated 1.5 billion euros were out of all proportion to the number of car trips saved. In 2018, the city senate under Mayor Harald Preuner made the decision to extend the local railway by 750 meters to Mirabellplatz as a first step .

A continuation of the S2 to Traunstein or even overseas is being considered.

The integration of the Stieglbahn with a development of the Salzburg airport is seen as great potential . The line would branch off from the west branch after the Salzburg Aiglhof station and run on mostly existing tracks through Maxglan to Austria's second largest airport.

For years, traffic activists have also been considering rebuilding the Ischlerbahn as the S5 in the direction of Eugendorf , Thalgau , Mondsee , Wolfgangsee and Bad Ischl . In order to advance the project, the mayors of nine neighboring communities founded an association in 2010. In 2011, 29 municipalities had already joined the association for the promotion of the RegionalStadtBahn , only the Mayor of Salzburg, Heinz Schaden , did not value public transport on this route.
