history

In 1999, the University Accreditation Act created the framework for the establishment of a private medical university . As a result, the Medical Faculty Salzburg - Private Foundation was founded by private individuals with the aim of creating a private medical university in Salzburg. In December 2000 the Salzburg state government ( Schausberger II ) supported this project with a grant of 10 million schillings .

Paracelsus, namesake of the university

On April 16, 2002, the private foundation submitted an application for the school to be accredited . This was granted on November 7, 2002 by the Austrian Accreditation Council and the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture (from 2007: Federal Ministry for Science and Research). On November 26, 2007, the accreditation was extended to December 31, 2014. In November before it expired, it was extended to the end of 2019.

The Nuremberg location was opened in February 2014. Since August 2014, doctors have also been trained there in cooperation with the Nuremberg Clinic .

The training offer in Salzburg includes the study of human medicine, nursing science and, since the winter semester 2017/18, the study of pharmacy. In addition, various postgraduate doctoral courses and other university and continuing education courses are offered.

On June 1, 2020, Wolfgang Sperl became rector. He succeeded founding rector Herbert Resch , who retired after 18 years in this function.

Mateschitz donated 70 million euros for this, and the State of Salzburg added another four million. It was the third largest private donation in the history of Europe to date.
