Hansjörg Wyss (born September 19, 1935 in Bern ) is a Swiss entrepreneur and patron .

Life

Wyss grew up in Bern. After studying civil engineering at the ETH Zurich , from which he graduated with a diploma, he studied at Harvard Business School from 1963 to 1965 and graduated with an MBA . He then worked in various positions in the textile industry. He also worked for Chrysler as an engineer and project manager in Pakistan , Turkey and the Philippines . In 1977 Wyss became president of the medical manufacturer Synthes USA and remained so until the company was sold. In 2011/2012 he sold his Synthes shares to the American pharmaceutical and consumer goods manufacturer Johnson & Johnson .

Political and social engagement

Together with Jobst Wagner, Wyss is the founder of the "Vorteil Schweiz" association to save the bilateral treaties between Switzerland and the European Union .

Wyss appears as a patron of the Ensemble Proton Bern , the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra , the Progr , the Fondation Beyeler and the Kunstmuseum Bern .

He founded the Wyss Foundation for the preservation of nature. This first got involved on the American west coast, but is now also involved in international support. Among other things, she is the largest single donor to the FZS . In 2018 it was announced that Wyss, through his foundation, intends to promote the protection of biodiversity by 2030 with US $ 1 billion from his private assets; The aim is to negotiate a new deal for nature ( Green New Deal ), through which 30% of the earth's land and ocean area will be under protection by the reference year.

As one of Harvard University's largest individual donors, he founded the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering in Cambridge in 2008 , and the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering and the associated technology park in Geneva in 2013 .
