The Fondation Beyeler is a Swiss art museum and foundation based in Riehen in the canton of Basel-Stadt .

development

The foundation, established in 1982, is the owner of the art collection that the married couple Hildy and Ernst Beyeler had put together for around 50 years . First shown publicly in 1989 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid , her focus is on classical modern and contemporary art .

Ernst Beyeler himself was in charge of the management, from April 1, 2003, Christoph Vitali , and Sam Keller since January 2008 .

Since September 2015, a sculpture path with twelve works by the sculptor Tobias Rehberger has connected the Fondation Beyeler with the architecture park “Campus” of the Weiler company Vitra . A further twelve sculptures were added in June 2016. The project is called 24 stops .

In 2016 the foundation counted 332,000 visitors.

In summer 2020, the museum submitted the building application to the canton of Basel-Stadt for an extension planned by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor in the adjacent Iselin-Weber-Park, which was built in the 19th century . The total investment is 120 million Swiss francs; the three-part building with a "House of Art" with an additional 1,500 m 2 of exhibition space as well as a service facility and an event pavilion is scheduled to open in 2023; construction is not expected to start until 2021 at the earliest.

From 2021, the museum will also be a location for filming in this context: Wim Wenders is planning a long-term 3D documentary about Zumthor's thinking and work, working title The Secret of Places . According to the supervising agency Boxfish Films, topics include the extension of the Beyeler Foundation in addition to the new Los Angeles County Museum of Art, also planned by Zumthor .

In 1994 the architect Renzo Piano was commissioned to build a public museum for the collection , which was opened on October 18, 1997 in the Berowergut park in Riehen BS . The museum building is characterized by its embedding in the environment, with a view of the orchards in the Lange Erlen , the meadow's river valley . The 127 meter long building is located on the busy Baselstrasse; it is shielded from their noise by a wall clad with porphyry tiles.

In January 2015, the Fondation announced its intention to build an extension in the neighboring, previously private Iselin-Weber-Park. In September 2016, a jury selected the project proposal from the Swiss architecture firm Peter Zumthor & Partner.

collection

The Beyeler Collection, which contains around 250 works of classic modern and contemporary art , documents the gallery owner couple Hildy and Ernst Beyeler's personal view of the art of the 20th century. Works by Edgar Degas , Paul Cézanne , Claude Monet , Henri Rousseau , Vincent van Gogh , Wassily Kandinsky , Henri Matisse , Fernand Léger , Alberto Giacometti , Pablo Picasso , Joan Miró , Alexander Calder , Paul Klee , Max Ernst , Piet Mondrian, among others , Andy Warhol , Roy Lichtenstein and Francis Bacon . The Rothko Rooms are a unique presentation of works by the artist outside of the USA. The works of art of classical modernism are juxtaposed with around 25 objects of tribal art from Africa, Oceania and Alaska.

In 1999, the large hall in the north of the building was extended by twelve meters, so that since then a third of the total of 3800 square meters of exhibition space can be reserved for special exhibitions that complement the permanent collection or enter into a dialogue with it. In the surrounding garden of the museum there are also special exhibitions that are accessible without admission to the museum. The veiling of the trees in the park by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in November / December 1998 caused a stir . From September 2011 to January 2012, Louise Bourgeois ' monumental sculpture Maman was presented in Bern, Zurich, Geneva and at the Fondation Beyeler on the occasion of the 100th The artist's birthday. In 2005 the foundation was the partner organization of the Blickachsen 5 sculpture exhibition in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . In 2018 it became known that numerous Impressionist paintings by the Rudolf Staechelin Family Trust would be on loan "periodically" to the Fondation in the future.
