The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) is an art museum , picture gallery and library , located in Madrid . The Spanish National Museum Center for the Arts Queen Sofia was on 10 September 1992 by the eponymous Spanish Queen Sofia , together with King Juan Carlos I inaugurated.

With its collection of recent Spanish art, it replaces the former Museo Español de Arte Contemporáneo (MEAC) and complements the famous Prado collection . In addition to the art exhibition, there is a library with around 40,000 volumes, mainly on art from the 20th century. Before opening as a national museum, it had been used as an exhibition space for contemporary art, especially sculpture , as the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía since 1986 .

In 2016 the museum had 3,364,598 visitors, making it one of the most frequently visited art museums in the world.

The collection

The royal decree of May 27, 1988, which elevated the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía to a national museum, also stipulated that the collection should primarily consist of works from the 20th century. As a national museum, the art of Spanish artists or artists associated with Spain should continue to be collected and shown.

The most famous painting exhibited there is probably Picasso's Guernica . Particularly interesting are the sketches, studies and drafts exhibited for the picture, which make the creation of the painting understandable.

Contemporary exhibitions

  • In 2008, Chus Martínez curated the retrospective of Deimantas Narkevicius “The Unanimous Life”, which was then shown in several important art museums in Europe.

architecture

The collection is housed in an 18th century building, the former Hospital General , which was a hospital until 1965. Various architects were involved in the restoration and conversion into an art center and museum; the extension was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel .
