Jean Nouvel
Jean Nouvel (born August 12, 1945 in Fumel , France ) is a French architect and recipient of the Pritzker Prize .
life and work
Jean Nouvel is the son of a teacher couple. At first he wanted to be a painter, but since a secure perspective for their son was more important to his parents, he studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux from 1964 as a compromise. When he won a scholarship in 1966, he was able to switch to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . In 1967 he became an assistant to Claude Parent and Paul Virilio . Towards the end of his studies, he founded his first office together with François Seigneur in 1970 . He graduated the next year. In 1976 he was one of the founders of the architectural movement "Mars 1976" and "Syndicat de l'Architecture".
Nouvel's breakthrough came with the Institut du monde arabe cultural center in Paris, which was designed together with the architecture studio Architecture Studio . Other well-known buildings are the Lyon Opera , the Cartier Foundation in Paris, the Euralille shopping center in Lille , the Galeries Lafayette Berlin , the Lucerne Culture and Convention Center and the Monolith that floated on Lake Murten during Expo.02 . Nouvel's most recent projects included the 142-meter-high Torre Agbar in Barcelona, the extension of the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and the (unrealized) Guggenheim museums in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro.
In 1994 he founded the “Ateliers Jean Nouvel”, which in 2017 was one of the largest architecture firms in France with 150 employees, of which 30 projects are managed at home and abroad. The central studio is in Paris, Nouvel also has branches in London, Copenhagen, Minneapolis, Rome, Madrid and Barcelona.
For the leather-processing Italian furniture company Matteo Grassi , Nouvel designed office furnishings, lounges and furniture for airports, among others, and the “Normal” desk for Bulo .
Nouvel has two grown sons from their first marriage and a daughter from their second marriage. His partner is the Swedish architect Mia Hägg (* 1970).
reception
Jean Nouvel is one of the most famous architects in France and has been able to work on projects throughout Europe and also in parts of Asia, North and South America. According to the New York Times, among others, he is considered a diverse designer and has mastered the use of colors, materials and surfaces. His architectural style is not characterized by a uniform design language, but always strives to adapt the building to the respective environment. "Every time I try to find what I call the missing piece of the puzzle, the right building in the right place."
