Fumel is a French town with 4834 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The city is located in the arrondissement of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and is the capital (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of Le Fumélois . The Lot , a French river in the Massif Central , crosses Fumel and flows into the Garonne River .

During the Wars of Religion, Protestant farmers attacked the place in 1561 and killed the Baron François de Fumel, lord of Château de Fumel and former ambassador of King Henry II at the Sublime Porte .
