Rives is a French commune of 221 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the canton of Le Haut Agenais Périgord (until 2015: canton of Villeréal ).

geography

Rives is located about 30 kilometers north of Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the historic province of Agenais on the northern border with the neighboring Dordogne department .

Rives is surrounded by the four neighboring communities:

Beaumontois en Périgord
(Dordogne)
Mazières-Naresse Neighboring communities Rayet
Villeréal

Rives lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Dropt , a tributary of the Garonne, crosses the territory of the commune, as does its tributaries,

  • the Brayssou with its tributary,
    • the Ruisseau de Pont Traucat, and
  • the Vieux Dropt with its tributary,
    • the Ruisseau du Martinet, which rises in Rives.

history

The settlement of the municipality took place in an earlier time, as evidenced by the remains of an oppidum , which were discovered during archaeological excavations. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the archpriesthood of Capdrot , from 1490 of Monpazier . Only in the 19th century did the parish join the diocese of Agen . In the years 1631 and 1632 a plague epidemic struck the place and resulted in numerous victims. Pastor Jean Gontier, who led the parish for 64 years, decided to move the deceased, who had initially been buried in the neighboring fields, to the parish cemetery. Since Rives is on the bank of a river, there were numerous water mills , some of which can still be seen today. The Ricard mill is now a residential building, the Pradagé mill has fallen apart, but the Rives mill is still operational.

In 1972 Rives was incorporated into Villeréal, in 1981 Rives became independent again.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 695 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 200 inhabitants during brief recovery periods up to the 1980s, before reaching a level of around 230 inhabitants stabilized.

Parish Church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens

Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens parish church

It was originally the chapel of a priory of the Benedictine order of the abbey in Aurillac . During the first Huguenot Wars , the priory, which had been converted into a fortress, was destroyed along with the chapel. As a result, the chapel became the parish church of the community. From the original building from the 12th century, only the large apse and the right apse-idole have been preserved. While the nave probably contained only one nave , there are three today. It is finished with a triangular bell gable. Only two large capitals remain from the former nave . One is decorated with a braided band and set into the wall above the entrance to the church. The other is on display inside and shows two monks in robes and cloaks under two arcades . The large apse is embellished with arched arcades on two levels with three figure capitals and other capitals decorated with braided ribbons and volutes . On the outside wall of the church, fragments of sculptures have been built, which presumably come from the Middle Ages and were reused as building material from an earlier building.

The church has been inscribed as a Monument historique since June 20, 1950 . Inside it contains three pieces of equipment from the 18th and 19th centuries, which are inscribed as a monument historique of movable goods. It is a processional flag, a cupboard and a gilded silver goblet .

Log cabin

There is a general ethnological interest in these structures, which were built in the area between the 14th and 17th centuries. During construction, planks were stacked on top of one another and built in half-timbered style . The building in the hamlet of Lonzaygues extends over a ground floor and a first floor with galleries on all four corners . The ground floor rests on blocks of flint and was originally built individually, as can be seen from the chimneys that were closed when the first floor was built. The wall surfaces on the first floor are made of wood and clay. The galleries are supported by thick posts that rest on flint blocks. Today the house is owned by a private person. It has been classified as a Monument historique since January 26, 1998 .
