history

In the course of excavations at the La Bayle mill in 1928, a site from the Neolithic Age was discovered which proves that the area was settled early. Despite the lack of evidence that the Celts took over the land, the community stands out thanks to a Roman road that was built from stone blocks and is still very much preserved.

The first mention of the parish of Saint-Loup-de-Cavarc dates back to 1266. At that time it was divided into two parts. the northern part around Canterane Castle belonged to the Sarlat diocese , the southern part belonged to the Agen diocese . The village thus belonged to the Périgord and at the same time to the Agenais.

During the Ancien Régimes , a large part of the parish was surrounded by the fief of Baron Beraud, Seigneur of Canterane and Cavarc. A few hectares, however, belonged to the Cadouin Abbey .

The French Revolution brought about the change from a parish to a parish. It was initially assigned to the newly formed canton Issigeac of the Dordogne, but transferred to the canton Castillonnès of the Lot-et-Garonne department in 1793 due to the dissatisfaction of the population about this step.

In 1841 the parish of Saint-Dizier was incorporated.

Population development

With the incorporation of Saint-Dizier, the number of inhabitants rose to a high of around 575 in the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 125 inhabitants during short recovery phases up to the turn of the millennium, before the growth phase that began today still going on.
