Several rivers have their source in the municipality,

  • the Barraca, a tributary of the Douyne, as well as its tributary, the Ruisseau de Coubault,
  • the Ruisseau Lataste, a tributary of the Gardonnne, and
  • the Courberieu, a tributary of the Dropt .

history

The area was inhabited by the Celts , as evidenced by axes made from polished stones found during archaeological digs. In Roman times, today's municipality crossed a Roman road that connected today's Périgueux with the provinces of the Iberian Peninsula . Remnants of this road made of stone and brick gravel embedded in cement are still visible today. The village was defended by two posts, Monteau-le-Vieux in the south and Monteau-le-Jeune in the northwest. The latter was protected by a moat to the south-west and towards the plain. There was also a round tower next to a fortified entrance. Its height is now reduced to half of its original size. A straight path connected the two posts over a length of 2,000 meters.

Around 1860, when the cemetery was moved, around 150 stone tombs were found in Monteau-le-Vieux, which are attributed to the Merovingian period. Short swords have been found in some .

In the 12th century a castle with a curtain wall was built on the foundation of an earlier motte . Despite the effects of the Huguenot Wars , Montaut was a thriving community during the Ancien Régime . Their fairs were famous and their markets were well attended. The market hall was demolished in 1810.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 760 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 205 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1990s, before a phase of growth began that continues to this day persists.

Parish Church of Saint-Pierre

Parish Church of Saint-Pierre

The church was built in the 15th century on the ruins of a previous Romanesque building. She is the former church of the priory of Benedictine . The entrance portal in the west dates from the 14th century. Narrow columns with sculpted capitals can be seen in its garments . The facade is crowned by a very thick bell gable, which is covered by flat tiles and flanked by two towers. A gallery opens to the front, accessible from a spiral staircase in the northwest corner. A vestibule precedes the facade. It has a small window and the remains of an old fireplace. The nave with three naves has a ribbed vault and dates from the 15th or 16th century. Its length is three yokes . The choir has a square plan. In 1830 the tiling was renewed. On this occasion, a crypt was discovered that was probably dug under the choir during the French Revolution .

The church has been classified as a Monument historique since June 3, 1932 .

The main altar dates from the 19th century and is one of the most beautiful in the department. Its canopy consists of six marble columns arranged in pairs, which support a dome that is crowned with a glory . In the middle of the canopy is the tabernacle . The altar is inscribed as a monument historique of movable goods.

A wall painting covers the walls of the choir. It dates from the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century. It starts on the north wall with the representation of the drawing of Jesus in Jerusalem and ends on the south wall with the representation of the Last Judgment . This element has been classified as a monument historique of immovable property since June 3, 1932 .
