Monviel is a French municipality with 79 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the canton of Le Haut Agenais Périgord (until 2015: canton of Cancon ).

The name of the community is derived from Mont vieux ( German  old mountain ).

The inhabitants are called Monvielais and Monvielaises .

geography

Monviel is located around 25 kilometers northwest of Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the historic province of Agenais on the northern edge of the department.

Monviel is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Tolzac de Verteuil, a tributary of the Tolzac , crosses the territory of the municipality.

history

An earlier masonry moth above the valley of the Tolzac documents the settlement of the area in the Middle Ages . In 1326 a certain Pons Amanieu de Madaillan was named Seigneur of Monviel, and in 1346 Amanieu de Madaillan, Seigneur of Cancon , received the area and castle of Monviel from the hands of the Duke of Normandy . In the 16th century Monviel belonged to Gabriel Nompar de Caumont before the parish passed into the hands of Bertrand de Vassal de la Tourette via marriage.

Population development

After records began, the number of inhabitants rose to a peak of 330 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community decreased with brief recovery phases, until it was able to stabilize at a level of around 80 inhabitants since the turn of the millennium.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Michel

The former church had a choir with a rectangular ground plan, which in a fünfwändigen apse completed, and a nave with a length of three yokes , the narrow columns were separated. Of this previous building, only the western entrance portal still exists today , which is very damaged. In 1889 the church was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style by master masons Lespinasse and Ratier under the direction of architect T. Teulère. On the north side, at the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century, the sacristy was added to the straight yoke of the choir. The architect Gaston Rapin had the walls and the vault reinforced in 1913 . In 1966 the architect J. Depoid and the contractor A. Parrot had the church restored.

Five glass windows are works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux , which he created in 1889. They show the Heart of Jesus , the Archangel Michael , Louis the Saint and two other windows decorated with ornaments with the coat of arms of Pope Leo XIII. and by Charles Coeuret-Varin, Bishop of Agen .

Monviel Castle

The castle was rebuilt on the site of the medieval castle in the first half of the 17th century for Jean-Louis de Vassal de la Tourrette, Seigneur von Monviel. It was originally built on a U-shaped plan with two wings flanking the courtyard. The left wing and an entrance portal were demolished at the end of the 19th century. At the end of the 20th century the building was restored and converted into a luxury hotel.
