location

The town of Pujols borders on the town of Villeneuve-sur-Lot to the south ; the old town center Pujols-le-Haut is located on an approx. 190 m high hill above the Lot valley and is approx. 145 km in a south-westerly direction from Bordeaux . The population decline, which began at the end of the 19th century, is essentially related to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs as a result of the increasing mechanization of agriculture . The enormous resurgence of the population is due to the proximity to the constantly growing city of Villeneuve-sur-Lot.

economy

For centuries the people of Pujols lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as a self-sufficient living ; Production surpluses could be marketed in Villeneuve. Wine was also grown, bottled in barrels and exported via the Lot and Garonne to Bordeaux and England; however, the phylloxera crisis put a temporary end to this branch of industry at the end of the 19th century. Today only a few wine is grown and marketed through the appellations Agenais and Comté Tolosan . Instead, the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) plays an important role in the municipality's economic life.

history

The place was already settled in Gallo-Roman times . In the 13th century a fortress ( castrum ) is mentioned that belonged to the Counts of Toulouse and was destroyed after the end of the Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229); the inhabitants of the place were expelled. In the 14th century Pujols was fortified again - perhaps in connection with the looming dangers of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Until the 16th century the place experienced its heyday; a collegiate church was built , a parish church and the medieval church of Saint-Etienne du Mail was renovated.

Attractions

Church Saint-Nicolas
  • The town center ( bourg ) consists of many old stone and half-timbered houses.
  • The Sainte-Foy church, dedicated to Saint Fides de Agen , was built in the 15th century. The laterally closed bell gable ( clocher mur ) and the polygonal broken apse are remarkable . The nave is spanned by a wooden ceiling; The apse and side chapels, on the other hand, are vaulted and covered with late Gothic frescoes ( root of Jesse , Saint Martin , Archangel Michael etc.). The best preserved is a portrait of the richly dressed Catherine of Alexandria with her martyr attribute, the wheel. The church was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1903 .
  • The collegiate church of Saint-Nicolas dates from the 16th century. Its tower is integrated into the city wall. The nave and apse are ribbed. The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
Market hall and city gate
  • The roof of the small market hall ( hall ) from the 19th century rests on wooden supports; the rear side is stabilized by a stone wall.
