The phylloxera crisis and powdery mildew in viticulture at the end of the 19th and the increasing mechanization of agriculture since the middle of the 20th century have led to a loss of jobs and a constant population decline.
economy
Until the middle of the 20th century, the residents of the village lived largely on their own farm, with cattle breeding playing a dominant role.
history
The place arose in connection with the establishment of a priory of the approx. 250 km east located Abbey La Chaise-Dieu in the late 11th century. Monastic life ended in the 14th century and the monastery buildings - with the exception of the church - were demolished in the following centuries. During the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) the nave was destroyed; behind the apse was an unadorned escape and / or defense tower with cross-shaped arrow slits .
Attractions
- The former priory church and today's parish church of Saint-Robert is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Robert von Turlande , founder of La Chaise-Dieu Abbey; Its construction began at the end of the 11th century and was completed around 1130. The choir section , built from precisely hewn stones, is designed as an ambulatory choir with adjoining chapels , whereas the nave , which was rebuilt in the 19th century, has only one nave and consists of roughly hewn stones; both parts are barrel vaulted . The importance of the two transept arms is emphasized by the chapel extensions. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 1862 .
- A slender wrought-iron cross from the 16th or 17th century standing in the forecourt is also classified as a monument historique .
- There are several imposing houses made of natural stone in the village - including the Château Verneuil , which has cross- frame windows .
Culture
Every summer since 1972 there has been a great festival of classical music - the "Musical Summer of Saint-Robert" ( L'Été Musical de Saint Robert ).
