The place had 444 inhabitants in 1793; At the end of the 19th century it was still well over 200.
economy
For centuries, Talmont was shaped by fishing, agriculture and viticulture, whereby the self-sufficiency of the residents was in the foreground. The vines grown in the area belong to the Bons Bois within the Cognac wine-growing region . Sturgeon were also caught in the Gironde estuary until the 1970s , which - because of overfishing - has been banned since 1982. Instead, tourism now plays an important role in the economic life of the place.
history
The history of the place goes back possibly to the Roman and Gallo-Roman times. In the Middle Ages, there was probably a military installation here, which was acquired in 1284 by Edward I , King of England and Duke of Aquitaine and - in the style of the south-west French bastides - provided with a rectangular street pattern and a city wall. During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) the area was disputed between the English and the French, but it remained firmly in French hands from the end of the 14th century.
During the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) the place changed the landlord several times and - as a result - also the religion. In the 17th century the medieval walls of the city fortifications had already fallen into disrepair and had to be repaired; a battery of six cannons was set up to protect the Gironde estuary from attack from the seaside.

Others
- The seaman's cemetery ( Cimetière marin ) illustrates the dark side of seaman's life: In addition to actual graves, there are also many cenotaphs - mock graves for seafarers who have not returned home. Until the 1950s, the cemetery was divided into a Catholic and a Protestant area.
- The city history museum ( Musée de l'histoire de Talmont ) is not far from the church and is divided into different sections (paleontology, fishing, the history of the Ste-Radegonde church, etc.).
- The Domaine de la Fond is the former property of a wealthy cognac dealer, including a mansion from the end of the 19th century. The village's only source of fresh water is located on the west side of the property - otherwise rainwater was collected in cisterns to provide drinking water.
